Cindy Abbott on her "Banner on the Moon" Everest to Sled Dogs and Back Again

    in Entertainment

For me, just the mention of Cindy Abbott, turns me into a bit of a giddy fan. Understand that it isn't entirely that she is one in 40 women in the USA to have ever summitted Mount Everest, or that she finished the Iditarod on her third try, taking the Red Lantern.  It isn't even really that she is the only woman to do both of these things. You see, she has a rare disease called Wegener's granulomatosis, and it was during training for her Everest climb that she was finally diagnosed after 14 years of fighting an enemy with no name.

So, what do you do when you are told you've got a rare and incurable disease? Well, according to Cindy, whether you ascend 29,029 feet on Everest, or you take a team of dogs and do 1049 miles to Nome, you just DO IT. Cindy made the decision to FIGHT. And fight she did. She decided to advocate and educate for NORD, or the National Organization for Rare Disorders, run the "Greatest Race on Earth," climb that rather big hill and continue to be a professor at California State at Fullerton.

There is a film about her that is finally finished after four long years in production that will be appearing in festivals this year, called Banner on the Moon. That banner of course is her NORD banner which she takes with her everywhere, and quite frankly, the moon would have to be the next stop for this lady.

On a personal note, and why I am so very passionate about speaking with her, is that I too battle a disease. Cindy has been a personal hero to me. So having this opportunity to talk sled dogs and how they've been a positive influence on her, as they have me, will be a highlight of my life. And I do hope that no matter who you are and what you do with dogs, that you too will find this amazing woman to be a source of inspiration unbound, and an example of the strength we all have hidden inside us, waiting for our dogs to show us where to find it.

Alice Linahan on the Transformation in Education.  Parents need to know what is going on around their child inside their mind and in their schools.  The latest passage of ESEA re-write puts a noose around children and parents must know.  The Department of Education is giddy--imagine that.  What is touted as getting us out of Common Core is actually worse because of the plans to teach from academics to attitudes, values and beliefs.  If our leaders and DOE were angels maybe we would not be concerned but....read this:

Ep. 15 — Brown Ambition, The Musical (Put a ring on it!)

    in Business

Sorry in advance for all the singing. We were a little giddy this week...but for the best possible reason! One of us has something MAYJAH to share today BA fam (and it may or may not involve a ring!).

After we squeal, we discuss important events of the last week, such as the Soul Train Awards (Baby Face tribute? Win! Choosing creeper R. Kelly to close the show? Fail!) and why it's important to support minority-owned businesses this holiday season.

For Brown Break, Mandi gets real about what it's like working in an open concept office — and how easy it makes it for outside work drama to get in the way of your work flow. Tiffany makes a confession about her social life (or lack thereof) and takes a brown break from staying home.

We answer an excellent question from a reader who wants to know if it's worth it going to a financial advisor -- and how she's supposed to get the house and family she wants with a mound of student loan and credit card debt weighing her down. WE are here for you Carrre girl!

As always, send us your money/career questions at brownambitionpodcast@gmail.com or hit us up on Twitter (@theBApodcast) or Facebook.

Cop raped by another Cop was at a party hosted by a Cop

The victim in the case is another police officer on the force. She told investigators she went to a party at the home of Officer Doug Strosahl Saturday evening. She said she had at least four drinks and eventually passed out.

Boynton Beach City Commissioners on Tuesday approved an$875,000 settlement in the civil case a Wellington woman filed against the city after she accused a police officer of rape.

Former Boynton Beach officer Maiorino was arrested on Oct. 30, 2014, on two counts of armed sexual battery by a law-enforcement officer, armed kidnapping and unlawful compensation or reward for official behavior while armed. Maiorino was put on administrative leave following his arrest, then he resigned from the department.

A jury found him not guilty of those charges in October.

In death, Illinois police Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz was praised by his fellow officers as a “hero” — a cop’s cop who took pride in mentoring kids to strive for their best before, police said, he was gunned down during a foot chase in September.

the 30-year veteran officer in the Chicago suburb of Fox Lake killed himself after years of criminal activity, including embezzling money through the Explorers youth program.

Lion of Vienna Suite - LOVpod Episode 33

    in Soccer

The Lion of Vienna Podcast is back along with it's long lost son.

Yep, Dan returns this week in what feels like as an eternity, and in great time too, as he has to take over hosting responsibilities with Chris other wise engaged.

Dan was joined by Liam and new debutant Jamie Moss.

The show got underway in classic fashion, talking about a Bolton Wanderers defeat, as the 1-0 loss to Birmingham was briefly touched upon. Then affairs were swiftly moved on to the more recent game, a 1-1 draw with Leeds United. The lads analysed the game in great detail, despite only one of them actually being there, leading to some insightful discussion.

Next up was a round up of the news in Wanderers world, as trio discussed: the signing of Shola Ameobi, Wellington Silva' injury lay off, Liam Trotter being loaned out and scoring, Haydn White scoring his first senior goal and former White Chris Eagles joining Bury.

The third segment saw a preview of Saturday's must win relegation battle against Preston North End, accompanied with some dreadful Halloween puns.

Finally, as everything was a bit last minute, there was no guess who or question of the week, but the boys debated the topic of how much is our current predicament Neil Lennon's fault.

    Enjoy.
