Music Journalist Alli Marshall has begun the promotional tour for her first novel, How to Talk to Rockstars, which was inspired by her years of interviewing musicians. The Western New York native was transplanted to Western North Carolina via Goddard College where she earned her MFA in Creative Writing before landing a job as the arts & entertainment reporter at Asheville’s alt-weekly news and arts paper, Mountain Xpress. A dozen years later she’s still at it, regularly interviewing musicians and artists of all genres, reviewing albums and writing articles. She also serves as the arts section editor at Xpress.
Musician, songwriter and performer Joey Stuckey has no boundaries. In his spare time, we're guessing he never sleeps, he is a producer, adjunct professor, TV show host, studio engineer - at his own Shadow Studios - husband, and very active in his community of Macon, Georgia. He's worked with and is highly respected by many of music's luminaries. While in Nashville working a production gig with legendary Alan Parsons he suggested a subtle change with one of the instruments would greatly improve the recording. After testing the idea, Parsons deferred to his judgement and followed it by directing the crew to follow Stuckey's direction without question. Yet even the Eye In The Sky guy likely never imagined he would see video proof of the Macon guitar slinger carjacking a woman's BMW to get to a gig in the video for his Blues song Blind Man Drivin'.
Mme Perry also had a few surprise guests that night!
We welcome your calls.
This is the first of our Best of CMW episodes, and I suppose this one could unofficially be called the Dine Alone Records round-up.
Dine Alone is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this year, and as such, founder Joel Carriere anchored a special panel during the conference to talk about the ups and downs of the last decade in the label game. Mike caught up with him before the round table to talk shop, and it's a great interview.
For musical artists, we've got both Monster Truck and Single Mothers on this weeks show - both blowing up, both Dine Alone bands. The former is working on the follow-up to 2013's hugely successful Furiosity while Single Mothers are still riding the attention surrounding their debut, Negative Qualities.
We've also got the boys in Billy Talent, who may not be a Dine Alone band, but considering their history with the likes of Alexisonfire, Moneen, Cancer Bats, and the gang, could be considered extended family.
Plenty more from CMW coming up. Enjoy!
Host Cyrus Webb welcomes back recording artist and musician Tomas Doncker to #ConversationsLIVE to discuss how he continues to make music that makes people think and feel and what's coming up next.
Born into a musical family, Lisa Johnson, a very gifted singer/songwriter/psalmist and author, discovered her talent for writing and singing at the age of two. Even at that age, she was able to absorb music and lyrics instantaneously and loved to sing. Her greatest inspiration falls into the hands of her parents who were members of gospel quartet groups that travel abroad throughout the state of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. As a teenager, Lisa displayed her musical talents by participating in talent show competitions, musicals and plays. It was then that she realized the value of her singing ability and won many first place recognition awards. As she continued to write, she also began to focus on putting together songs for her first studio recorded gospel album entitled This Time - a personal CD that has the ability to capture the listener with its soulful contemporary songs and heartfelt lyrics. Lisa is now back with her sophomore gospel album entitled How I Made It Through which shows not only growth and character within her writing and vocal ability, but also the fun side of her. This album is guaranteed to keep you moving as well as in worship. You can take a test drive of the single ‘Shout About It’ at http://lisaajohnson.reverbnation.com In 2010 Lisa started a community magazine From Lisa’s Corner. The Magazine which is designed to make known those talents and dreams that no one has noticed or forgotten within the community. One being a book of poetry entitled Diary of Expressions with her husband Jerome Johnson, Sr. (2003) and the other entitled Raising A Proverbs 31 Woman Self-Esteem, Self-Worth, And Self-Discovery Of A Young Woman with LaTracey Copeland-Hughes (2014).

Host Cyrus Webb welcomes musician Russel Blake to #ConversationsLIVE to discuss not just his love of music but what it's been like to see the response from his fans. The two will also discuss his single WALK THE TALK and what's next for him.
When we started The #SocialSpitballShow, it was to be "your forum to discuss politics, religion, democracy and sometimes even music, sports & culture." On this episode of The Social Spitball Show, we will still be discussing politics as usual, but we have two special guests who will guide us in the world of both music and comedy.
Our first featured guest will be Cal Taylor, founder/singer/songwriter of the band Wavy Train out of Charlotte, NC, possibly joined by some bandmates. After taking a few years off to tend to families and life and general, The band's sound has evolved into more progressive, funk, rock, more influenced by bands like Radiohead, Rage, Talking Heads, Primus, Beck, Black Keys, Gorillaz..but still perform live w/ crescendos & decrescendos, segues from one song to another, & other exploratory jam techniques similar to The Dead & Phish. You won't be able to describe them w/ a specific genre. And that's exactly what they are shooting for.
You'll get to hear plenty of their music and their thoughts on the politics of music, as well.
Kona Lowell, The Sleeping Poet of Kealakekua, hides out on the Big Island, Hawaii, with his miniature wife, Chee, an assortment of odd cats and one rather small cat-like creature named Miu. He is also the author of Don’t Pet the Sharks, the followup to The Solid Green Birthday & Other Fables. A musician and composer as well, Kona is the leader of the progressive rock band, No Empty Sky, whose first CD, Empire, contains the only progressive rock song ever written about Hawaii, Yellowbird (Hawaii Nei) and is not nearly as silly as the rest of the stuff he does.
Sounds like an entertaining show! Let's get the conversation going...
It's a pleasure having I Mother Earth's Brian Byrne on the show, especially since we get to chat about the band's upcoming appearance at the Unison Jam on May 6th at the Phoenix Concert Theatre. The money raised during the initiative, which also features the likes of Finger Eleven, Kim Mitchell, k-os, Jason McCoy, The Trews, and many others, will go to the Unison Benevolent Fund and help those in the music industry during their time of need.
As for IME, they're currently promoting their hot new single, "The Devil's Engine" at radio. Fans will also have a chance to hear it from the stage during some summer performances, including a slot at WTFest in Brantford, ON on June 13th.
We also have singer/songwriter/guitarist Salvatore Costa on the show, speaking about his project Smashing Satellites. The band's EP debut, SonicAluzion A-Side, dropped last fall and the buzz has been building quickly. Smashing Satellites is taking part in the May 8th edition of Generation Next Live during Canadian Music Week. We'll chat about the show and the band's impressive success of late.
Welcome! We're stoked to have Joel Plaskett back on the show, this time discussing his most recent release, Joel Plaskett & The Park Avenue Sobriety Test. It touches on his solo acoustic side, his guitar rock work with the Emergency, his happy-go-lucky rhyming talents, carefree memories of growing up in Nova Scotia, and a little bit of anger at the forces making life tougher these days. There are many moments that draw on previous classic Plaskett, from beloved albums such as Three and Ashtray Rock, right back to his Thrush Hermit days. And there are new sides to his sounds as well – Joel like you’ve never heard him.
Of course, we'll also have our Canadian Spotlight Song of the Week, which comes to us courtesy of Kaylan Mackinnon.
