Tonight and the rest of this week we are going to discuss Cleavers NOTES ON NATIVE SON. In this we will discuss the theory of self hate and displaced love for those who are your enemy and enemy to the thought of a life of liberation for Black People. "After reading a couple of James Baldwin's books, I began experiencing that continuous delight one feels upon discovering a fascinating, brilliant talent on the scene, a talent capable of penetrating so profoundly into one's own little world that one knows oneself to have unalterably changed and liberated from the frustrating grasp of whatever Devils happen to process one. Being a Negro, I have found this to be a rare and infrequent experience, for few of my black brothers and sisters her in America have achieved the power, which James Baldwin calls his revenge, which outlast kingdoms: the power of doing whatever cats like Baldwin do when combining the alphabet with the with the volatile elements of his soul. (And, like it or not, a black man, unless he has become irretrievably "white-minded, " responds with additional dimension of his being to the articulated experience of another black---in spite of the universality of human experience.)
I as I imagine many others did and still do, lusted for any-thing that Baldwin had written. It would have been a gas for me to sit on a pillow beneath the womb of Baldwin's typewriter and catch each newborn page as it entered this world of ours. I was delighted that Baldwin, with those great big eyes of his, which one thought to be fixedly focused on the microcosm, could also pierce the microcosm. And although he was so full of sound, he was not noisy writer like Ralph Ellison. He placed so much of my own experience, which I thought I had understood, into new perspective." SOUL ON ICE by Elderidge Cleave
will discuss further the meaning of self hatred and what it has done to the Black Movement of Independence in America. The damage is irrefutable and sustaining so much so that it is one of the main causes of the break down in the Black Family that is creating so many single family house holds. That can neither maintain the children who suffer in silence nor the men and women who attempt this life of Blasphemy against the true command of the God of the Universe. “ A rereading of NOBODY KNOW MY NAME cannot help but convince the most avid of Baldwin’s admires of the hatred for blacks permeating (from) his writings. In the essay “PRINCESS AND POWERS” Baldwin’s interpretation of the conference of Black Writers and Artist which met in Paris in September 1956. The portrait of Baldwin that comes through his words is that of a mind in unrelenting opposition to the efforts of solemn, dedicated black m who have undertaken the enormous task of rejuvenating and reclaiming the shattered psyches and culture of the black people, a people scattered over the continents of the world and the islands of the seas, where they exist in the mud of the floor of the foul dungeon into which the world has been transformed by the whites." Eldridge Cleaver. Our beloved leader Huey P. Newton says this about the homosexual groups. "We should try to form working coalition with the gay liveration and women's liberation groups. We must always handle social forces inthe most appropriate manner."
Tonight's show we will start on the ideals of a hero, for years the death of Malcolm X was covered up with many conspiracy theories. We will discuss one of them as seen through the eyes of Eldridge Cleaver. In: PART TWO THE BLOOD OF THE BEAST "LAZARUS, COME FORTH" The Blood Lust.
"The boxing ring is the ultimate focus of masculinity in America, the two-fisted testing ground of manhood, and the heavyweight champion, as a symbol, is the real Mr. America. In a culture that secretly subscribes to the piratical ethic of "every man for himself"------ the social Darwinism of "survival of the fittest " being far from dead, manifesting itself in our rat race political system of competing parties, in a dog eat dog economic system of profit and loss, and our adversary system of justice wherein truth is secondary to the skill of connections of the advocate------ the logical culmination ethic , on a person to person level, is that the weak are seen as the natural just prey of the strong. But since the dark principle violates our democratic ideals and professions, we force it underground, out of a perverse national modesty that reveals us as a nation of peep freaks who prefer the bikini to the naked body, the white lie to the black truth". I am reading this book when my High School Class is in a class of reading, to let my class know that there is good and evil in all things. Life is not always just about black and white, friends and foes, there is always betrayal in between. As Bob Marley said "Yor worst enemy could be your best friend and your best enemy. Some will eat and drink with you then behind them suss upon you.
The murder of Malcolm X, the exile of Robert F. Williams, who was forced the flee to Cuba with the combined terrors of the FBI and the minions of Southern justice snapping at his heels, and the exile of the late W.E.G. Du Bois, who, in the sunset of a valiant life, made three symbolic gestures as a final legacy to his people (renouncing his American citizenship, ‘returning’ to Africa to become a citizen of Ghana, and cursing capitalism while extolling communism as the hope of the future) —these three events on the one hand, and on the other hand the award of a Nobel Prize to Martin Luther King and the inflation of the image to that of an international hero, bear witness to the historical fact that the only Negro American allowed to attain national or international fame have been the puppets and lakers of the white power structure—and entertainers and athletes….
It is against the back ground of the traditional role of the Negro entertainer and athlete in racial crisis and the rebellion against that tradition — that the Muhammad Ali— Floyd Patterson fight for the heavyweight championship must be viewed." Soul On Ice by Eldridge Cleaver
"Malcolm X knew that he needed a prominent ally to help him launch a new organization once his permanent suspension became public. It so happened that Cassius Clay, scheduled to fight Sonny Liston for the heavyweight championship of the world, was a good friend of Malcolm X, one of the few people Malcolm X ever invited to this house….." JUdas Factor Karl Evanzz
"The broad support for Muhammed Ali among negroes had nothing to do with the black Muslims’ racist ideology. Even the followers of the late beloved Malcolm X, many of whom despise Muhammad Ali for the scurvy remarks he made about the fallen Malcolm….." Soul On Ice
Initial Reaction on the Assassination of Malcolm X
After Malcolm made his pilgrimage to Mecca, completing a triumphal tour of Africa and the Near East, during which he received the high honors of visiting dignitary, he returned to the U.S.A. and set about building his newly found Organization of Afro-American Unity. He established the Muslim Mosque, Inc., to receive the Muslims he thought would pull away from Elijah. The Muslim Mosque would teach Orthodox Islam, under the direction of Sheik Ahmed Hassoun from the Holy City of Mecca. Grand Sheik Muhammad Sarur Al-Sabban, Secretary General of the Muslim World League, had offered the services of Shei Ahmed, help Malcolm X in his efforts .......
"So now Malcolm is no more. The boot lickers, Uncle Toms, lackeys, and stooges of the white power structure have done their best to denigrate Malcolm, to root him out of his people's heart, to tarnish his memory. But their million-worded lies fall on deaf ears. As Ossie Davis so eloquently expressed it in his immortal eulogy. "If you knew him you would know why we must honor him: Malcolm was our man hood, our living, black manhood! This was his meaning to his people. And, in honoring him, we honor the best I ourselves..... However much we may have differed with him -----or with each other about him and his value as a man, let his going from us serve only to bring us together, now. Consigning these mortal remains to earth, the common mother of us all, secure in the knowledge that we place in the ground is no more now a man---but a come forth again to meet us. And we will know him then for what he was and is ---- a Prince ------our own black shining Prince!----- who did n't hesitate to die, because he loved us so." Ossie Davis
We shall have our manhood. We shall have it or the earth will be leveled by our attempts to gain it." SOUL ON ICE, by ELDRIDGE CLEAVER
“UNITING AGAINST A COMMON ENEMY OCTOBER 23, 1971” Dr. Huey P. Newton
If we get rid of the enemy in a united common struggle it would be easy to transform this unity into a common theme of things. We are not separate nations of men to continue the pattern of fighting amongst ourselves. We are a large collection of communities who can unite and fight together against our common enemy. the United States domination over all our territories equals a reactionary (in opposition to the interest of all) set of circumstances among our communities. Reactionary Inter-communalism. We can transform these circumstances to our benefit: Revolutionary Inter-communalism.
On the continent of Africa there are people who look like us. They are Black. We are brothers because our struggle is common. We have both suffered under the White racism and under oppression. This is why we should not let the reactionaries of the world be the only ones communicating across the waters of the masses of land. We have a common interest to survive, and therefore, we can learn from each other."
"Despite their religious differences, they came together. Some were communists; some were socialists; some were capitalists. Despite their economic and political differences, they came together. All of them were black, brown, red, or yellow.
The number-one thing that was not allowed to attend the Bandung conference was the white man. He couldn’t come. Once they excluded the white man, they found that they could get together. Once they kept him out, everybody else fell right in and fell in line. This is the thing that you and I have to understand. And these people who came together didn’t have nuclear weapons; they didn’t have jet planes; they didn’t have all of the heavy armaments that the white man has. But they had unity." MALCOLM EL HAJI MALIK SHABAZZ
The oppression of the people of the world is not just limited to brutal force which is nothing more than conquest by the American Government the force of the illigal strong arm of the Secret Socities of the Wealthy Pigs of Arostocracy, but the economic conditions created by greed of the rich and those who seek to be rich. HUEY P. NEWTON put it bluntly in his :“UNITING AGAINST A COMMON ENEMY OCTOBER 23, 1971”To achieve this end, we struggle here in the United States to get rid of our oppression.others struggle inside their territory boundaries to get rid of oppression. The more territory we liberate in the world, the closer we will come to an end to all oppression . The common factor that binds us all is not only the fact of oppression but the oppressor: the United States Government and its ruling circle. We, the people of the world, have been brought together under strange circumstances. We are united against a common enemy. Today the philosophy of revolutionary inter communalism dictates the the survival programs implemented by and with the people here in America and those same basic People’s Survival Programs being implemented in Mozambique by the Mozambique Liberation Front are essential to bringing about world unity, from Africa to the Black community inside America, developing and uniting against a common enemy. That enemy has rolled up into one large hand the power of the World."
UNITING AGAINST THE COMMON ENEMY, October 23, 1971 "
"What does the Black Panther Party mean when we say that we are revolutionary inter-communalists? In a few words, we believe that the world's people from a collection of communities, all dominated or controlled, by those who rule the United States. The most common definition for a nation (as opposed to a community) is a group of human beings who have in common their own land territory, economic system, culture ( or way of day to day living), language, etc. At one time men from one nation would go out, and through warfare, conquer other nations. The conquer would bring under their control the resources, the people, perhaps everything that was sovereign or sacred to the other nations. A variety of things would result: A government of the conquered nation; the foreign language may be imposed upon the people; the name of the nation might be changed; or most importantly, the economy of the conquered nation would be fully controlled by the conquerors." Huey P. Newton .
"We have a common enemy. We have this in common: We have a common oppressor, a common exploiter, and a common discriminator. But once we all realize that we have this common enemy, then we unite on the basis of what we have in common. And what we have foremost in common is that enemy — the white man. He’s an enemy to all of us. I know some of you all think that some of them aren’t enemies. Time will tell.
In Bandung back in, I think, 1954, was the first unity meeting in centuries of black people. And once you study what happened at the Bandung conference, and the results of the Bandung conference, it actually serves as a model for the same procedure you and I can use to get our problems solved. At Bandung all the nations came together. Their were dark nations from Africa and Asia." MALCOLM EL HAJI MALIK SHABAZZ
Tonight we will discuss strategy of the destruction of the Black Panther ideal's by the COUNTER INTELLIGENCE PROGRAM and the confusion that they caused in the Black coumminity."The BlackPanther Party is a community-wide inter communal force. We want to organize Black business so that while making a living themselves they may also serve the BlackCommunity that gives them their small profits. We want them united. WE want them to act in unison. We want them to use a common bank in order to give themselves more economic muscle. I f they are strong they can better serve the Black community…. We feel that we must organize the family first so that we may go out and see that which is due the family In order to do this we must build a solid foundation through a community- focused Black united front. We cannot afford the luxury of individualism. The idea of Black individualism is sheer madness, impotence personified. The Black Panther Party has community survival programs that must have the support of those who are able to help Support of these survival programs will build a strong Black community.” HUEY P. NEWTON “BLACK CAPITALISM RE-ANALYZED II (Practical Application) August 9, 1971" T
“All survival programs are free. We have never charged the community a dime to receive the things they need from any of our programs and we will not do so. We will got get caught up in a lot of embarrassing questions or paperwork which alienate the people. If they have need we will serve their needs and attempt;t to get them to understand the true reason why they are in need in such an incredibly rich land. Survival programs will always be operated without charge to those who need them and benefit by them.
In order to carry out such programs we have always needed money. In the past we received money form wealthy White philanthropists, humanitarians, and heirs to the corporate monopolies. At the same time we were engaging in a blanket condemnation of the small victimized Black Capitalist found in our communities. This tactic was wrong since we receive the money for our survival programs from big White capitalists and we freely admit that.” HUEY P. NEWTON “BLACK CAPITALISM RE- ANALYZED I” JUNE5, 1971
TONIGHT WE MORN THE LOSS OF YET ANOTHER BLACK MALE CHILD. To you my people I say the time is now to rise against this beast that is destroying our community. Yes we have to deal with the DEVIL the real one, all evil in any from must be abolished and wisdom must take over. The ability to reason and analyze our situation, yes it has a lot to do with the White Man but it has much more to do with our Black Men. If we do not make them change from the evil that they have become how can we proceed. Huey P. Newton said that in order for there to be true revolution a person must change from within first in order to deal with the phenomena that surrounds us. Since the fall of the Party I have seen Black Men try to con the World into Believing that they are fighting the Revolution.
Where there is courage, where there is self-respect and dignity, there is a possibility that we can change the conditions and win. This is is a possibility that we can change the conditions and win. This is called /revolutionary enthusiasm/ and it is the kind of struggle that is needed in order to guarantee a victory. If we must die, then we will die the death of a revolutionary suicide that says, “If I am put down, if I am driven out, I refuse to be swept out with a broom. I would much rather be driven out with a stick because if I am swept out with the broom it will humiliate me and I will lose my self-respect. But if I am driven out with the stick, then, at least, I can claim the dignity of a man and die the death of a man rather than the death of a dog.” Of course, our real desire is to live, but we will not be cowed, we will not be intimidated.
I would like to explain to you the method that the Black Panther Party used to arrive at our ideological position, and more than that, I would like to give to you a framework or a process of thinking that might help us solve the problems and the contradictions that exist today. Before we approach the problem we must get a clear picture of what is really going on; a clear image divorced from the attitudes and emotions that we usually project into a situation. We must be as objective as possible without accepting dogma, letting the facts speak for themselves. But we will not remain totally objective; we will become subjective in the application of the knowledge received from the external world. We will use the scientific method to acquire this knowledge, but we will openly
acknowledge our ultimate subjectivity. Once we apply knowledge in order to will a certain outcome our objectivity ends and our subjectivity begins. We call this integrating theory with practice, and this is what the Black Panther Party is all about.
Marx attempted to set up a framework which could be applied to a number of conditions. And in applying this framework we cannot be afraid of the outcome because things change and we must be willing to acknowledge that change because we arc objective. If we are using the method of dialectical materialism we don’t expect to find anything the same even one minute later because “one minute later” is history. If things are in a constant state of change, we cannot expect them to be the same. Words used to describe old phenomena may be useless to describe the new. And if we use the old words to describe new events we run the risk of confusing people and misleading them into thinking that things are static.
In 1917 an event occurred in the Soviet Union that was called a revolution. Two classes had a contradiction and the whole country was transformed. In this country, 1970, the Black Panther Party issued a document. Our Minister of Information, Eldridge Cleaver, who now is in Algeria, wrote a pamphlet called “On the Ideology of the Black Panther Party.” In that work Eldridge Cleaver stated that neither the proletarians nor the industrial workers carry the potentialities for revolution in this country at this time. He claimed that the left wing of the proletarians, the lumpen proletarians, have that revolutionary potential, and in fact, acting as the vanguard, they would carry the people of the world to the final climax of the transformation of society. It has been stated by some people, by some parties, by some organizations, by the Progressive Labor Party, that revolution is impossible. How can the lumpen proletarians carry out a successful socialist transformation when they are only a minority?
