Film, Oil & Water David Poritz & Fair Trade Oil

    in Lifestyle

Mitchell’s guest this evening is a young man whose story was one of two told in the film Oil & Water, David Poritz, about the devastation of large swaths of the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest, right in the middle of Indian tribal lands inhabited by the indigenous people for generations.  The film was featured on Progressive Film Hour on March 3, on which Mitchell interviewed one of the filmmakers, Francine Strickwerda and the other young man whose story was told in the film, Hugo Lucitante.

Both controversial and with impassioned, environmentalist emotions set aside, today’s guest, David Poritz, is creating a novel and really desperately needed protection of indigenously-populated lands through the ranking/rating system of safety and what need to be eco-sensitive practices by the oil industry, just as we have fair-trade certification for coffee, diamonds and other commodities often originating in the highly-exploited “Global South”.

Oil and Water will be the featured film for the matinee showing at the Paradigm Shifts Music and Film Festival on Sunday, March 29 at 3pm. For more information and tickets, go to: http://abetterworld.tv/a-music-and-film-festival-march-19-29/

TPP and TPA - Why These Trade Agreements Are Bad For Us All

    in Politics Progressive

Some say that recent trade agreements have been detrimental to the average person while benefiting corporations. The Trans Pacific Partnership is said to be detrimental to our national sovereignty. Much of the agreement is secret, however, segments have been leaked to the public and indicate that governments could be sued by corporations if their profits are impacted by regulation. This means that a corporation could sue a government over regulations concerned with drug or food safety if the actions affected profit. A government could be sued for subsidizing a local industry if it affected the profit of an international company. The Transpacific Partnership - TPP has many people concerned. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans-Pacific_Partnership The Trade Promotional Authority - TPA would give the President of the United States the power to negotiate trade agreements that congress could not alter. Doing Business With Africa: How To Empower Ourselves Through International Trade

    in Women

As much as African Americans talk about knowing our historic roots in the Motherland of Africa, too few have considered taking advantage of the opportunities to do business with Africa. We often note that Koreans, Arabs and other ethnic groups come to America with products to sell us from their homeland, and they set up shop in African American communities without hesitation. Yet Africa is the site of gold, diamonds and other raw materials which all other nations are striving to get access to in order to build their economies. Entrepreneur Khalid Muhammadreed explains how to enter the international trade business and take advantage of the vast economic opportunities
