Interracial relationships are on a rise in the United States. Interracial married couples grew by 28 percent from 2000 to 2010, making 8.4 percent of all current U.S. marriages mixed-raced.
So, it’s no surprise that there has been an explosion of television shows featuring interracial couples. However, mainstream television series that portray Black people in interracial relationships – with Black women in particular – appear to far outnumber programs depicting Black couples.
In 1975, “The Jefferson" was the first television series to garner attention to featuring the first African American/Caucasian marriage. The series ran for 10-years. Just recently, there has been a huge influx of television shows that promote interracial relationship – with its most popular and most controversial – ABC’s "Scandal".
On this episode of Hot Topics Talk Radio, we’re going to examine the rise of shows which promote interracial relationships, and the decrease of shows that depict Black relationships and marriages. We are asking the question, “Is Black marriage going away in mainstream television?”

Before the abolishment of slavery in the United States, freed and escaped slaves in the 1700s and 1800s headed north to Canada and established a city called Africville. Our show on July 23rd will be a special show and broadcast "live" from Halifax, Nova Scotia (Africville) as part of our education tour to the birth of Africville, Nova Scotia.
Nova Scotia is considered the birthplace of modern ice hockey. On this tour, we will learn about the establishment of The Colored Hockey League by upstanding role models and an organizational talent never seen in Black sport.
We will interview various guests with ties to this rich history who will share with our listeners stories about the people how pioneered with a spirit that lives on. This broadcast will be in conjunction with the Africville Reunion, which is celebrated every July. They come to reminisce, to re-acquaint and re-establish themselves as a community. And we will celebrate with them!
