    Remembering Carnival Traditions

    in Culture

The first carnival was staged in 1912 during the final years of Danish occupation and lapsed during World War I. Revived in 1952, carnival has become the second largest festival in the Caribbean.

A month-long series of dazzling pageants and talent shows is held to choose royalty to rein over the festival. Fun events such as a boat race, Greased Pig Contest and Toddlers Derby entertain everyone at the festivities.

A series of elimination contests to crown top performers are called Calypso Tents. Calypsonions offer satirical commentary on the state of the islands, oftentimes mocking the shenanigans of politicians. Other popular events held during Carnival is j'ouvert, a morning jump up, a food fair presenting the islands’ best traditional eats and a competition to crown the King and Queen of the parade troupes.

God-Given Vision...Seeing Past Obstacles & Distractions - Sis. Trenita Thomas

    in Christianity

    Message taken from Genesis 21:19 &  2 Kings 6:17

Trenita Thomas was born and raised in Washington D.C. and although she was raised in the church, she did not accept and receive Jesus as her personal Lord and Savior until the age of 32.  Since that time, Trenita has gone on to serve the Lord in many capacities, ministering through song in the choir, sharing/singing/praying at various nursing homes as well as a Women’s shelter in D.C.   In addition, Trenita serves a  Women’s group called S.W.A.G. which stands for Sister’s with a Glow - the name taken from Exodus 34:29 (The Message version) When Moses came down from Mount Sinai carrying the two Tablets of The Testimony, he didn't know that the skin of his face glowed because he had been speaking with God ) that was formed in September of 2011. The group meets on Tuesday nights and has been instrumental in bringing about healing for Women, married and single alike. To God be all the Glory. Part of the mission statement reads “Sisters helping Sisters grow in grace, love, and the knowledge of Christ”. Trenita is a member of Remnant Ministries where the Pastor is Gary Thomas who just happens to be her Dad. Trenita has one adult daughter-Tynisha Pope and is on a single journey with the Lord at this time which she has found to be extremely rewarding, dedicating this time to falling more in love with Jesus, and as she likes to say "basking in the SONshine"!

  • East of Bethel - When Expectancy Is Tested

    in Christianity

In Genesis 12:8 Abram moves to a mountain East of Bethel.  Bethel is blblically defined as "the place where God dwells or God's place".    Abram built an alter there and called on the name of the Lord.  As Abram continued his journey to the south, he encounters a famine as he sojourns into Egypt.  When he enters Egypt he asks his wife to pretend to be his sister, an act that causes more harm than good.  Sometimes a promise from God will incease our belief until we are at a point of expectancy.  And when there is an intervening event that causes our belief to fail, our flesh can rage with disappointment which causes us to act out in a manner that disagrees with the thing or situation that God wants us to believe.  God is still faithful to establish His will even when we fail in expectation.

His Abounding Grace Broadcast with Rev. Ray: A week in review!!

    in Christianity

“When Christians Speak” Talk Radio Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: Overview: His Abounding Grace is a marvelous gift that we oftentimes take for granted. It is because of His Grace that second chances exist; it is because of His Grace that we are not consumed; it is because of His Grace that the enemy is already defeated! So, instead of using His Grace as an opportunity to continue to sin, [God Forbid as Paul says in Romans 6:1], we should be continually praising God that through the precious blood of Jesus Christ - Grace did much more abound! Praise the Lord!!!
