The New Western and Westerns in Film and Television

    in Books

AUGUST 13, 2015 - LIVING A RICHER LIFE ~ Life Changing Talk Radio

Anne Hillerman- Author of eight non-fiction books and WWA  Spur Award Winner for the Best First Novel.

THIS WEEK’S MESSAGE: When most of us think of reading westerns, classic western authors such as Louis L'Amour or Zane Grey come to mind.  But several contemporary authors are taking the themes of the traditional Western and applying them in more contemporary settings.  If you enjoy stories about semi-nomadic wanderers who live hard lives, mostly in wilderness settings, dealing with questions of honor and justice, you might want to try one of these stories of the new west. Also Westerns today are  in both movies and television. But you may be surprised to learn that Westerns are the major defining genre of the American film industry. They are one of the oldest, most enduring and flexible genres and one of the most characteristically American genres in their mythic origins. Let's learn more about the new western and westerns in todays' film and television.

    THIS WEEK’S MESSAGE:

The Traditional Western is a genre of various arts, such as comics, fiction, film, games, radio, and television. Westerns are devoted to telling stories set primarily in the latter half of the 19th century in the American Old West, hence the name. Many feature American Indians, bandits, cowboys, lawmen, outlaws, and soldiers, and as well as spectacular mountain scenery. Some are set in the American colonial era. There are also a number of films about Western-type characters in contemporary settings. Western Writers specialize in all types of western historical non-fiction, fiction and tales of the American frontier. Many consider the golden age of the historic west to have occurred for only three decades, from the end of the civil war to the beginning of the 20th century. Western fiction peaked during the 1960's and is still alive and well. Why are traditional Westerns still…a very a good read?

Western music is not to be confused with Country music. Western music is a form of American folk music composed by and about the people who settled and worked throughout the Western United States and Western Canada. The Mexican folk music of the American Southwest also influenced the development of this genre.  With the Traditional Western being a genre of various arts, such as comics, fiction, film, games, radio, television and music, getting "westerns" published and in the hands of fans can also be confusing and a challenge to understand. Tonight we learn about today's contemporary western music and about how today's publishing experts get the western genre to market.

The Western Trails - Legend, Facts and Great Stories

    in Books

AUGUST 20, 2015 - LIVING A RICHER LIFE ~ Life Changing Talk Radio

THEME: The Western Trails - Legend, Facts and Great Stories

    INTERVIEW GUESTS:

Will Bagley- Author of over 20  books. Will's work has won every major prize in Western History--an Old Joe, the Spur, the Wrangler, the Caroline Bancroft, the John W. Caughey Prize for the year's most distinguished book on the history of the American West, and the Merrill J. Mattes Award for Excellence in Writing.

Melody Groves - Southern New Mexico Author whose novels reflect her fascination--and ties--with that era of the Old West--gunfighters. Her books reflect her passion for rodeo and appreciation of historic wooden bars. Yes bars--the front and back wooden structures.

THIS WEEK’S MESSAGE: In the American Old West, trails were used by immigrants from the eastern United States, between 1830 and 1870. These colonists began to settle various regions of North America west of the Interior Plains, during the overland migrations of the mid-19th century.  There were two major wagon networks, one based typically out of Missouri and the other out of Santa Fe de Nuevo México. These trail networks have become embedded in the folklore of the United States as one of the significant influences that have shaped the content and character of the nation. Whether its a fact or a legend, behind it always lie a great story.
