A chat with author Penny Wagner
Three cheers from this Jersey Girl who grew up to love the Bible, baseball, and the Beatles. Teacher and advocate of children, Penny Wagner earned the knowledge that no two children are alike and they all possess the inert ability to "make the world a better place." As a teacher of thirty years she encouraged and inspired a few of her students into a world of travel and adventure, the dream of the house at the sea, and an infinite chance to make this world a better place. Penny resigned from her 30 year teaching career to be with her mother. Even though her mother suffered from COPD she fought valiantly and refused to be defined by her illness nor limited by it. She found pathways around it. She was a real star and pursued “life” to the end.
During that time Penny began to journal about their days together. The result is her new book, “Two Elephants in a bathtub Taking Care of Mom.” It’s about her and her mother and their family’s dynamics during her care. It relays to the readers that this time of “terminal, ”when her mom was still hanging on to all her hopes, was meant to be, and it truly was for them, not a time of loss. It was a time of love. It was not a time of a step down, but a time of a step up.

My guest today is Penny Wagner, author of .. “Two Elephants in a Bathtub Taking Care of Mom.
Penny’s dad passed away and then she lost her beloved husband. After her mom moved to Florida, she became very ill there. Penny packed her children, Lin, Andrew, and Gary, the pets, and a few belongings and headed south to” take care of Mom.” She began to journal about her days with her mom and those scratched out notes made during nights of unending prayers, preempted her book, “Two Elephants in a Bathtub Taking Care of Mom.” She jokes, “Ask me “why I chose that title, later.” It is with intense pride that she passes this story on to the listeners, today.
The purpose of writing this story, she says, is not to just retell the challenges of those, “decades of weeks,” but to give meaning , and most remarkably a beauty to the time when life is being disappeared. “ You can’t deny heartache,” says Penny, “ but you can find a strength or empowerment an enrichment during that time that may be felt so deeply that it would impossible to override that purposefulness and wholeness, again, It never leaves you. It’s not about loss. It’s about love.”
