Episode 1009: Professional Volunteer Fire Service

    in Training

In many areas of the country, fire departments have implemented junior firefighter programs to help recruit new members. Some departments have experienced great success with the programs, and others have had a difficult time. In addition, some firefighters speak favorably and fully support the programs, and others are against them. On tonight's show, host Tom Merrill and his guest will examine both sides of the issue and discuss the benefits as well as the challenges of having a Junior Firefighter program in our departments.

Our guest tonight is Chief Jeff Cash, who has been in the fire service for over 35 years serving in both career and volunteer departments. He is currently the chief of the Cherryville (North Carolina) FD – a position he has held since 1986 and is the past president of the North Carolina Firemen’s Association and serves as the North Carolina director to the National Volunteer Fire Council – also sits on the NVFC Executive Committee and is a member of the NVFC Junior Firefighter Program Advisory Group.

We welcome your input is well. Feel free to call in and discuss junior programs or anything else on your mind concerning our great volunteer fire service

Episode 974: The Professsional Volunteer Fire Service

    in Training

Examining issues and challenges faced by the volunteer firefighter today.  Being a professional firefighter has nothing to do with earning a paycheck but has everything to do with attitude, appearance, commitment and dedication.

This episode's guest is Candice McDonald who is a volunteer firefighter in the Winona (Ohio) Fire Department and is associated with the Cumberland Valley Volunteer Fireman's Association.  She will be discussing "Reputation Management" and how we can work within our firehouses to prevent behavior that is detrimental to the reputation of the fire service. She will offer tips and provide information and ideas on how to implement safeguards in your firehouse  to protect it from reputational threats AND from making headlines for the WRONG reasons. She will also offer ideas as to how social media can be used in a positive way to recruit new members as well as show the public the professional service your volunteer fire department provides!

The Angel Brings Fire: Author Marcus Shields

    in Books

Having been an avid consumer and part-time supplier of science fiction and fantasy content is nothing new to Marcus Shields, who has been partaking thereof, since he was old enough to read.

Marcus is currently employed as a computer security professional. Shields is the author of a large number of so-far...unpublished works, ranging from the Shakhan series of pen and paper fantasy role-playing games, to a daily series of political email blasts to all who are interested, and many more who are not.

He resides in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, where he shares a comfortably modest home with his wife, daughter, and very furry, and very spoiled, "cross-breed" a.k.a. "mutt" dog.
