Every Leader needs to set his own navigational vision on the team. But visions etched forever in stone, like pyramids, house only the dead. Host Bart Jackson brings on guest James daSilva, Editor of SmartBrief's SmartBlog on Leadership, to give us all some strategies for crafting a vision, instilling it solidly in the team's minds, and adjusting it to fit corporate reality. As a veteran business journalist, James holds a vast knowledge of what it takes to plan your team's or company's course, and how you can communicate this vision with verve to the crew on whom you depend. If you want to get a better message across more effectively, this is a show that will provide you with the needed tools. Tune in, learn a bit, and have some fun.
Jazz/Pop artist Pete Belasco began playing piano at a young age, later turning his concentration to saxophone. Both of his parents played piano as well. In high school, Belasco played in rock bands, but he soon became primarily interested in jazz and studied sax at Rutgers University and the Hartt Conservatory. He was also preparing a demo at the time, but was involved in a severe boating accident that broke both of his hands. For several months, he was unable to play, but in the interim he turned to composing and singing. In retrospect, Belasco has referred to the accident as a watershed experience because it forced him to develop his songwriting and singing skills. Belasco’s demo made its way to Verve Records, and A&R Executive, Guy Eckstine, who signed him. Upon healing, Belasco moved to New York to record his debut, Get It Together, which was released on Verve Forecast in the fall of 1997. The album was a concoction of influences such as, Marvin Gaye, the Beatles, and Curtis Mayfield, along with jazzy pop and lounge music cool. As Pete Belasco created the songs that would become his second album, Deeper, he kept returning to a common theme-intimacy. The grooves were sensual, relaxed, erotic. The lyrics were passionate, tender, generous. In a time of confusion and strife, Belasco wanted to sing about love, about faith, and about supporting one another. In a feature article in The Village Voice, music journalist James Hunter rhapsodizes about Belascos second effort
If it seems like 23-year-old Cody Karey has been preparing his entire life for his self-titled Verve Records debut album, that’s just because it’s true. From the moment the then-18-month-old rose from his high chair to warble along with “Achy Breaky Heart” at a Pizza Hut somewhere in north British Columbia, and received a standing ovation, Karey’s destiny was sealed.
The latest world-class tenor pop vocalist discovered by label Chairman David Foster—who has a track record for that sort of thing—Karey’s bow has attracted some impressive talent, including Grammy-winning producer Walter Afanasieff (Mariah Carey, Luther Vandross, Celine Dion, Lionel Richie), ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Bernie Herms (Brad Paisley, The Tenors, CeCe Winans, Casting Crowns, Jackie Evancho). Greg Wells (Adele), Josh Kear (Lady Antebellum) and Ryan Tedder (One Republic, Leona Lewis and Beyonce).
“This is the culmination of many years of work and a lifetime’s worth of focus,” says Karey. “It’s very exciting to be on the cusp of getting it out there to people, and being able to take one more step in the direction of my ultimate dream.”

She claimed the blues, soul, gospel, country and rock with unquestionable authority and verve, fearlessly inhabiting psychedelic guitar jams, back-porch roots and everything in between. Her volcanic performances left audiencesstunned and speechless, while her sexual magnetism, world-wise demeanor and flamboyant style shattered every stereotype about female artists - and essentially invented the "rock mama" paradigm
Released by 19 Recordings/Interscope Records, Music Speaks serves up a sophisticated yet supremely soulful blend of love songs and self-empowerment anthems. In creating the album, Candice Glover partnered with an A-list lineup of producers that includes The Underdogs (Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Justin Timberlake), Mike WiLL Made-It (Rihanna, Miley Cyrus), The Jackie Boyz (Madonna, Sean Kingston), Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins (The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga), and Paul “Hotsauce” Dawson (Robin Thicke, Usher). Endlessly moving and deeply intimate, Music Speaks finds Glover channeling the emotional dynamism of legendary vocalists who’ve long inspired her. “My biggest influences have always been singers like Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Marvin Gaye, and Whitney Houston—the kind of people who are so heartfelt in their performance, you can just immediately feel what they’re singing,” notes Glover.
You can tell when a woman has finally come into her own. It's in the swivel of her hips, the growl in her voice and the joy that brightens her face when she smiles. A woman filled with confidence is a force to be reckoned with. For singer songwriter Ledisi, that exuberance rings through on every track of her new album The Truth. And that's saying a lot. Over the past 13 years, New Orleans native Ledisi Anibade Young has recorded six albums, gained eight Grammy nominations including a nod for "Best New Artist" in 2008, performed six times at the White House for President and Mrs. Obama, and earned a place in the pantheon of the best soul singers of her generation. With The Truth, Ledisi, known for her rich and evocative ballads says it's time for something new.
