In the past few years, I've come to know of Sean Michael Ray through the various people that we know in common: most notably, Eric Essix. Our friend, Eric, has known Sean for a long time - they are, after all, Birmingham musicians whose paths crossed early. Now, Sean is living in Atlanta and is part of the hot music scene there...has been toiling in the fields, as it were, for years. So the name of his new CD is appropriate: "Overdue" :)
Our handsome guest has music in his blood - Mom was a Church organist and Dad also played bass - and was known in Alabama for his expertise. Sean was initally attracted to the trombone - until he contemplated the role of that instrument while watching "Soul Train." He realized that, whoever was playing bass, stayed on stage. Trombonists were only heard and seen for part of the song. So, Sean focused on the instrument that would change his life...particularly since his Mom made him promise to STICK to it!
Since he was 15, having been inspired by Verdine White of Earth, Wind and Fire, Sean has been relentless. And has become so profiicient on bass that he has earned the respect of those with whom he has played: Maxwell, Sheila E, John Waite - and a number of Contemporary Jazz artists. But he has also performed on some movie soundtracks that you might know: "First Wives Club", "Ghost of Mississippi" and "The Truth About Cats and Dogs."
Not confined to any one style, Sean has allowed his music to gravitate toward any direction that he feels at the moment. Funk, Pop, Jazz, R & B, Modern-Day Christian - you can feel both the roots and the refreshing direction of a Bass "specialist" on "Overdue." Truth is that it sounds like the most fun allowed by law :-D Kelvin Wooten and Hart Ramsey co-produced, along with Sean. You'll love the music AND him!
