Moving Beyond Psychological and Verbal Abuse

    in Psychology

THEME: Moving Beyond Psychological and Verbal Abuse

    INTERVIEW GUEST: Debbie Zoub, MSW

Debbie Zoub, MSW, is a clinical social worker and a survivor of abuse. She has spent much of her twenty five year career working with all types of abuse, both as a therapist and caseworker. Her professional and personal understanding of living a life of abuse forms the basis of her Professional Counseling Practice, Healing Heart. Healing Hearts provides abuse counseling and support to both female and male clients.

    THIS WEEK’S MESSAGE:

Getting out of the abusive situation is the first step toward healing and moving on in your life, but unfortunately your work doesn’t end there. Once you are physically safe and secure, it is a good idea that you seek professional help for any abuse-related difficulties you may develop. For example, you may have difficulty coping with abuse memories themselves. You may also benefit from assistance in coping with problems that develop because you were abused, such as substance abuse problems, sexual or intimacy issues, anger issues, eating disorders, etc. Each person experiences abuse differently, and is able to cope with abuse in different ways depending on their circumstances. Is it possible to move  beyond psychological and verbal abuse?

#259 Understanding the Chart from Building Verbal Imitation in Toddlers Book

Join pediatric speech-language pathologist Laura Mize, M.S., CCC-SLP from teachmetotalk.com as she discusses issues related to toddlers with speech-language delays.

Here's a question I receive at least weekly from a mom or an SLP:

"Dear Laura.... I've purchased your Building Verbal Imitation in Toddlers book and am using it with a few of my kiddos. I've skimmed the entire book and  am having success with some of my harder clients that weren't making any progress before, but I don't understand when to progress a child to the next level. How long do I work on skills in one level before moving on? Can you point me to your specific criteria for each level in your book? I also think it would be helpful to list that information on your chart."

I wish it were that simple!!

In this week's show, we'll discuss how I use "the chart" diagnostically with toddlers with expressive language delays and how to use the information to plan therapy goals and activities for sessions.

Get the book Building Verbal Imitation Skills in Toddlers

Human Trafficking - A Survivors Story - Michaela Floyd

    in Motivation

Michaela Floyd grew up in a very dysfunctional household. Her father was a preacher that eventually was kicked out of the church due to his alcohol abuse and was abusive to her mother. Michaela suffered through emotional, verbal and physical abuse at the hands of her father. Her mother finally left her father in Michaela’s late teens.

Dating was very difficult for Michaela because she felt that every man would be abusive but while in college she married an older man just to escape her chaotic life. Early in her marriage her husband was very controlling and for the most part she was compliant but when she wasn’t it resulted in extreme physical abuse. The abuse continued through the marriage and although Michaela never denied him sex, he began raping her in order to show his control over her.

After her husband began abusing drugs, they divorced & she moved to Nashville.  After seeking employment with no luck, she finally took a job as an erotic masseuse after being assured that she would not have to do anything she didn’t want to do.  She soon found out the company was owned by a prominent mafia family. She was trafficked in 11 states and 26 cities within a 3-month period. After finally being able to get back to Nashville and becoming an independent sex worker in order to support her family. But over the course of 15 months was able to rebuild a life for her family, attend counseling and eventually get out of the life.

Michaela has become active in speaking out and working with other survivors to reach out to women still trapped in trafficking and prostitution. Eventually, she would like to do this kind of work full-time, but for now God has opened many doors and she has been busy educating herself about this horrific evil. She feels very blessed to know so many survivors and to call them her sisters and friends.”
