    Eating Vegan and Healthy Soul Food Cooking - Why Vegan is the New Black

    Can a diet free of meat, milk, eggs, butter and cheese actually taste good? Deborrah Cooper, author of the new cookbook WHY VEGAN IS THE NEW BLACK: MORE THAN 100 DELICIOUS MEAT AND DAIRY FREE MEAL IDEAS YOUR WHOLE FAMILY WILL LOVE says the answer is "absolutely!"


    Her goal for this book was to help change the perception that healthy foods look weird and taste bad. The typical American diet is full of greasy high sodium fast food that really packs on the pounds and sets us up for serious health problems. Reducing the quantity of animal protein and upping the plants we eat has been proven to reverse heart disease, normalize blood sugar and lipids, and lower both weight and blood pressure in just a couple of weeks. 


    Statistics support these concerns, especially in the black community. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 78.6 million Americans are obese, which directly impacts the health and longevity of nearly one-third of the U.S. population. Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer. High blood pressure and arteriosclerosis impact the sexual health of Americans as well, reflected in erectile dysfunction in men, and reduced desire and blood flow to the vaginal area in women.


    These are largely preventable afflictions, directly related to what we put in our mouths. Reality is, what we're putting on our plates is killing us. Find out more about how you can begin changing your diet for the better in this broadcast.

    Mark Sutton - Vegan Pizza; Musician, Lisa Marshall; YOUvolution; & Back on Track

    Mark Sutton is the author of the 1st ever Vegan Pizza Cookbook, "Heart Healthy Pizza," with a forward written by one of our previous guests, Howard Lyman, The Mad Cowboy.  Mark has been employed as the Visualizations Coordinator for two NASA Earth Satellite Missions, a freelance interactive multimedia computer consultant, an organic farmer, and head photographer.  Mark has produced work for two Nobel Prize winners (on global climate change) and helped create UN Peace Medal Award-winning high school curriculum.  He's currently the editor of the Mad Cowboy e-newsletter.


    Mark Sutton will join us to talk about his book, which contains over 100 plant-based recipes for making pizza. Through the imaginative use of grains (oats, quinoa, millet, and others) as well as legumes (such as chickpeas, black eyed peas, white beans, dal), sometimes nuts, and various vegetables (artichokes, carrots, corn, etc.), Mark has created 60 unique "cheese-like" sauce recipes that range in taste texture from a delicate velvety to a custard firmness. Most are gluten-free!  With recipes for pizza crusts (including gluten-free versions), "bottom sauces" & total pizza concepts, this book will help anyone create the most healthy pizza possible.  Yum!!

    Vegan, Raw and Rightfully So...A Simple Path to Health and Wellness

    Everyone thought the raw vegan diet was a fad soon to pass, but in 2014, it's alive and well. The raw food movement has been around for decades, but recently, it has morphed into a diet that’s more accessible, affordable and sophisticated – and no longer only for the crunchy, hippie types (not that there’s anything wrong with that :-)


    The raw food concept, at a basic level, believes that cooking removes the nutrients in food. Gena Hamshaw, CCN, a former book editor turned clinical nutritionist and author of “Choosing Raw: Making Raw Foods Part of the Way You Eat,” has been at the forefront of this shift. She believes that we should know where our food comes from, what it does to our body and how we can think about it as fuel, rather than just something to alleviate a hunger pang.
