It is unlikely the town of Ferguson, Missouri will change in our lifetimes. The mainstream media has portrayed Ferguson, Missouri as a town of rioter’s and looter dismissing the fact the town of 21,203 (2010 census) is in a crisis. In a report from ArchCity Defenders — a legal group that “works to break the cycle of ‘revolving door justice’ in the St. Louis metropolitan area” — reveals that in 2013, “the Ferguson Municipal Court disposed 24,532 warrants and 12,018 cases, or about 3 warrants and 1.5 cases per household.” In Ferguson, the “majority (67%) of [the city's 21,203] residents are African-American” and “22% of residents live below the poverty level.” Despite Ferguson’s relative poverty, fines and court fees comprise the second largest source of revenue for the city, a total of $2,635,400 [...] According to a court employee, the docket for an average court session may include as many as 1,500 cases. Assuming an 80% conviction rate, the average fine in a case resulting in a guilty verdict would be $275.The local carnage happening over the last month and a half is a direct representation of what being poor, black and broke looks like in a town with no opportunities to rise beyond the mundane.

American Vernacular presents Black Man Down: The Killing of Michael Brown and the Souls of Black People. This episode takes an unflinching look at the spike in killings of unarmed Black men and women by police in America, the public's indifference to it and the rising cost of it to taxpayers. Does this emotional disconnect highlight a different form of racism in Anglo-Americans that runs far deeper than we're willing to admit and how does a civilized society overcome that? We will also discuss the militarization of police departments, including the use of drones on American citizens, and what this potentially means to your righs under the U.S Constitution. Gospel artist Bryan Wilson joins Gospel Talk to discusss his latest album and "The One Percent," writing the hit single "Turning Away," plus he chimes in on the plight of young Black men in light of the recent unrest in Ferguson, MO following the death of unarmed Black teen Michael Brown.
“Turning Away” hails from the 30-year old singer’s fifth solo CD “The One Percent” (EchoPark Entertainment). Wilson made his splash in the gospel pool as the ten year old soloist for “His Eye is on the Sparrow” with The Mississippi Children’s Choir in 1994. He released Dove and Stellar Award nominated CDs for Malaco Records before taking a recording hiatus to attend Claflin University and Princeton Theological Seminary. Wilson returned to the recording booth in 2008 with the critically acclaimed CD “A Second Coming” that featured the radio single “My Soul Boasts in the Lord.”
In a recent article by the Christian Science Monitor, one young man named Anthony Pruitt walked up to the Missouri State Highway Patrol in the midst of the protests saying.. “We hurt, we broken, and we ain’t all criminals,” Mr. Pruit said. He then pulled down his bandanna to show his face, which was by then streaked with tears. “How can y’all fix this?” One difficult question you might ask, however it is one that needs to be addressed. Of course the portests and riots were a direct result of and unarmed 18 year old young black man named Michael Brown being shot several times by a white officer named Darren Wilson. Every since then it has created racial tensions, the resurface of questionable tactics by law enforcement, and including the constant search for answers as to why these type of incidents continue to plague our communities. What as a community can we truly do to combat these travesties? What can we teach our young men about how to avoid these situations? Join another edition of Open Treasures as we attempt to tackle the question...What do we do next?
Since the Ferguson, Missouri uprising over the killing of unarmed teen Michael Brown, hoards of stories have surfaced exposing the wrongful killing and incarceration of African American males across America, in many large urban areas but quite oftn in small towns where an oppressive racial climate still exists despite Civil Rights legislation and an African American president in the White House. A horror story of total disregard for the law has emerged from Putnam County Georgia, where police appear to have conspired with lawyers an judges to imprison African American teen Damiean Wicks for shooting Rontavious Crawford, even though Rontavious pointed out the white man Phillip Calloway as the guilty party. Phillip Calloway, identified in court by the victim as the culprit, verified as being at the scene of the crime by cell phone tracking evidence, admitted to irratic behavior due to drug use. He was merely sent to rehab, while Damiean Wicks, dismissed by the victim Rontavious Crawford as being innocent and proved nowhere near the scene of the crime by cell phone tracking evidence, was nevertheless convicted as guilty imprisoned. His grandmother, Judy Farley, has launched a campaign to free her grandson Damiean and is calling for intervention by the U.S. Justice Department in this small town of Eatonton Georgia where whites in authority have seemingly tossed justice to the wind while they jail and kill blacks at whim. Today's guest, Judy Farley tells her incredible story. What happens when law enforcement officers and the courts in a city are all corrupt? How can citizens get justice? What would make the Federal government intervene? Will it take another riot?
The shooting of unarmed Michael Brown by Ferguson Police officer Darren Wilson set off a chain of events in and around St. Louis. Numerous individuals and organizations, including activist groups, community leaders and members of the clergy all had a lot to say about the incident. One individual’s perspective, Minister and Activist Johnathan Gentry, has garnered a lot of attention. In fact, a six minute video of him expressing his thoughts about the shooting gained enough popularity to land him an appearance on Fox News. Many people agree with what he had to say. However, some do not. Is there any truth to Minister Gentry’s statements or is he just another “Uncle Tom” tap dancing for the white man? How do the views expressed in his video and TV appearance relate to the Bible? Join us as we search for answers to these questions and more.

Exposing the government for what it is, a mafia that rules only by the threat of force without concent. Governments and it's rulers have no place in the world. I don't want someone else to represent me and make decisions about how I should live my life, when I know what's best for me and can represent myself. I am not a republican, I am not a democrat. I'm not a liberal, I'm not a conservative. I will not allow you to define me, or force me to join one of your gangs. I am an individual and I believe in freedom and liberty for all people, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation as all human beings have a right to freedom and liberty. I will stand up to government oppression and do what I can to educate the public on the illusion and or lack of true freedom in America.
