    in Self Help

Please visit www.QigongMasters.com to watch the video versions of some of our interviews.

Dr. Yang has been involved in Chinese Kung Fu since 1961. He has taught seminars all around the world, sharing his knowledge of Chinese martial arts and Qigong. As a child, Dr. Yang learned much patience and endurance, growing up in Taiwan during the post World War II era. He came from a family of 9 children, and his family often went without food for days. Despite such hardships, Dr. Yang became one of the few students in his high school to attend college. He earned his B.S. in Physics from Tamkang University and his M.S. in Physics from National Taiwan University. In 1974, he moved to America to pursue a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, which he earned in 1978. Dr. Yang began training martial arts at the age of 15 under his White Crane master, Grandmaster Gseng, Gin-Gsao. After suffering a chronic ulcer for some time, Dr. Yang also began to study Tai Chi under Grandmaster Kao, Tao. From practicing Tai Chi and Qigong, Dr. Yang was able to make a full recovery from his ulcer. During his time at Tamkang College, Dr. Yang began to also train Long Fist under Grandmaster Li, Mao-Ching. Seeing the misconceptions of traditional Chinese arts and culture in America, Dr. Yang gave up his engineering career to dedicate his life to preserving the arts and educating the people about Chinese culture. Since 1982, he has systematically driven and developed an international martial arts organization of 55 schools in 18 different countries. Today, there are thousands of students worldwide in Yang's Martial Arts Association (YMAA). Dr. Yang has also written over 30 books. He founded YMAA Publications Center in 1984 to publish his extensive knowledge of martial arts and Eastern culture. YMAA Publications has since become a pioneer and leading standard in the martial arts community worldwide.

    Back To Basics

    in Self Help

It is so important to look closely at what surrounds you. I like to do my own lawn service. It gives me exercise and I feel close to nature. I have found myself looking more closely at what I had identified as "weeds" in my lawn and this inspection drove me to go to YouTube to see what herbist would say about some of the weeds that I had systematically sprayed or pulled out of my yard. What I thought would be a short visit to the computer became a webinar-like session.
As a physician, I was taught that there is no antedote to the brown recluse spider bite and the victim must endure much pain and a necrotizing ulcerative site until the "damage" ran its course. Well there is a weed call the ribwort or plantain grass that releases the pain of insect bites and  heals ulcer lesions on lthe skin. This weed is very prevalent in Louisiana where brown recluse spiders are often a nuisance. It was the "ancient people" , "old wive's remedies" that treated what pharmaceutical companies can not so  young clinicians perpetuate the myth that there is no treatment.
I am now energized at the idea of recovering what my Grandmother practiced and what my Mother referred to as Mother wit. The old-fashioned remedies have been discarded and needs to be revisited.
I started brewing a lemon grass tea that has replaced coffee in my diet and my blood pressure is superb. My age peers, including my sisters, ask me what medicines that I take for hypertension and I say none. In fact, I do not take any prescribed pharmaceuticals. I believe that food is a medicine.  I do believe that we are what we eat.
I do not avocate becoming a fanatic, but I think that we need to stop and look at what nature has provided and some trying to make a "new and improved" version of everything. We need to get back to the basics. Maybe an astronaut needs to "eat" pills instead of food; I don't.

    What is Ganoderma.

    in Health

Ganoderma is the name of the fungus Ganoderma lucidum. It is also called the reishi mushroom or in Chinese ling zhi. It is one of the most popular medicinal mushrooms in China, Japan, and the United States.
Ganoderma grows on logs or tree stumps. It has a shiny, hard, asymmetrical cap that ranges in color from yellow to black. The cap, spores, and mycelium are all used medicinally. Wild ganoderma is rare in Asia.
In ancient China, ganoderma was so rare and so highly prized that it was reserved for the emperors and called the "Elixir of Life." In 1972, Japanese researchers successfully cultivated the mushroom. There are six different colors of cap: red, green, white, black, yellow, and purple. These researchers showed that all colors are the same species, and that the color variations are the result of differences in environmental conditions. Despite this, some herbalists insist that certain colors of reishi mushroom are more potent or effective in healing certain conditions than others.
Ganoderma has recently attracted the attention of Western cancer researchers. A case study report from Columbia University indicates that a Japanese dietary supplement containing ganoderma as well as genistein, a soybean derivative, may be useful in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer.
Ganoderma is also used in treating conditions of the nervous system. It is used to calm the nerves, cure insomnia, reduce stress, eliminate nervous exhaustion, and increase determination and focus. Laboratory studies show fairly conclusively that ganoderma does act as a sedative on cells of the central nervous system and possibly has painkilling and anti-convulsive properties.
Ganoderma is frequently used to treat allergies, hay fever, bronchial asthma, and to reduce skin inflammation.
