Join co-hosts Dr Jason Stein (iRyse.com) and Eric Komoroff (www.communityofunity.org) as they explore the developmental markers for adolescents becoming adults. What are the signs that a child is becoming an adult? Is graduation from high school just a rite of passage or does it really signify something more important? Turning 18 is the mythical age of freedom, but in reality there is a significant increase in responsibility. These are just a few points which will be discussed in this episode.
Hales Franciscan High school, a private Catholic institution known for its long standing tradition of high academic achievement, was in danger of closing due to decreased enrollment, creating a financial crisis that school alumni have come together to resolve. During their recent awards banquet, school officials announced a plan to seek out 25 top scholars to enroll in the school to continue its legacy. Formerly an all boys school and now a co-ed facility, Hales Franciscan has maintained a 100% success rate in graduating its students and preparing them for acceptance into college. Attorney, educator and talk show host Jerome P. Barney explains what has helped Hales create successful student graduates and why radio station WVON has come aboard to launch a drive to increase its enrollment.
A play on Philip K. Dick book, "Do Androids Dream Electric Sheep", on which the Ridley Scott directed movie 'Blade Runner' was based on, a majority of today’s high school students seem to embrace failure as an option because they either 1) feel that they will be bailed out by a teacher because of pressure to give the students a passing grade, or 2) they will always be served by a society that has conditioned them to think that society will wait on them hand and feet thereby the student doesn't have to do anything. Kinda like a diner in a restaurant waiting to be served by the waiter/waitress. I have seen the future of this country in classrooms, and it’s frightening. Yet, are too many of todays students doing what the school system has conditioned them to do? Lets talk about it.

It's Prom season, the annual last dance of the year, when man look forward to that special evening with hopefully the date of their dreams. Too often prom night is promoted as the night for a boy and girl to lose their virginity, if they haven't already, and this is somehow the mark of adulthood. Graduation ends their high school career, but what are they ready to contribute to the world after school is over? Do they have professional skills, a trade, a business idea they can explore, any means of earning a living? What if they can't afford college, or what if they must work their way through college, what can they do? What if they must leave their parents' home and live on their own, are they ready? This has been a stressful season for youth, facing violence from the streets and from police, even if they enroll in college, so what have we equipped them with in order to survive as legal adults, age 18, when they are done with high school. We're all set to celebrate the transition from one phase of life to the next, but after the celebration, what then? Have we really prepared our youth for the next phase of their lives? Sholanda Parker of B&B Creations shares her observations as one who is an event planner and creative designer in the business of helping others celebrate life's big moments. Joining us in our second hour will be Ken Ealy a professional barber from Mod Style Barber Shop, and he'll take a look at some surprising new trends in hair design.
