Below are some of the most frequent questions we get at www.deathofmypet.com We will go over the answers to these questions about pet loss and how it affects those of us who are are suffering.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PET LOSS
& THE GRIEF OF LOSING A BEST FRIEND.
How is it possible that I am sadder with the loss of my dog than with the loss of close family members?
For many people the love and companionship of a pet may be the only or certainly the strongest bond of unconditional love they have experienced. It is also possible, like many of my clients, which you have been strong and practical while caring for ailing parents or friends. But suddenly, your best friend and closest companion is dying and it is the last straw on a pile of buried emotions. It may be that your pet was your “safe place to go and soft spot to land.”
2. I feel like I am going crazy. Am I ever going to feel normal again?
Yes, you will feel emotionally better but different than before. You will eventually remember and rejoice in the many happy times you had with your pet. You will be able to reflect on the many life lessons you shared.
3. How long will I grieve my pet?
All of our emotions are individual. When we love deeply, we grieve deeply. Grief coaches often say that it takes about a year before your loss is the first thing you think of in the morning and the last thing you think about at night.

in Pop Culture
According to some sources, the term may have first been used in 1962 by civil rights activist and poet Amiri Baraka. 1962 was the same year that Sylvia Woods opened her now-famous Harlem restaurant Sylvia’s; today, Sylvia is known by many as “the Queen of Soul Food.” Soul food restaurants and cookbooks continued to be popular through the ’70s.
Soul food is basic, down-home cooking with its roots in the rural South. The principle staples of soul food cooking are beans, greens, cornmeal (used in cornbread, hush puppies, johnnycakes, and as a coating for fried fish), and pork. Pork has an almost limitless number of uses in soul food. Many parts of the pig are used, like pigs’ feet, ham hocks, pig ears, hog jowl, and chitlins. Pork fat is used for frying and as an ingredient in slowly-cooked greens. Sweet, cold drinks are always a favorite.
“Soul” or “Southern?”
To a lot of people, all that just sounds like a description of Southern food. The distinctions between soul and Southern are hard to make. In his 1969 Soul Food Cookbook, Bob Jeffries summed it up thusly: “While all soul food is southern food, not all southern food is ‘soul.’ Soul food cooking is an example of how really good southern Negro cooks cooked with what they had available to them.”
Soul food has its roots in slavery, when African Americans had to make do with whatever food was available to them. For the next hundred years after the abolition of slavery, most African Americans lived in poverty, so recipes continued to make use of cheaper ingredients. Of course, this isn’t entirely a black/white issue.

Healthy Pet HQ with Jodi Z is happy to welcome Susan Thixton, the Caped-Crusader For Safe Pet Food, to the show.
Susan is THE advocate for safe pet food; the voice of petsumers everywhere. Her site, TruthaboutPetFood2.com provides information on pet food ingredients, recalls, industry trends and even insight into the goings on at AAFCO and FDA meetings regarding pet food and regulations.
On PetsumerReport.com, Susan provides in-depth reviews on all brands and all types of pet foods. She works tirelessly to discover the origin of ingredients, whether ingredients are feed grade or human grade, if the facility where the foods are processed are not only USDA inspected, but if the food passed inspection. Susan also explains which ingredients are not safe and why. She explores who uses GMO-free foods, BPA-free packaging and a whole lot more.
Susan recently began a consumer group, the Association for Truth in Pet Food.
The pet food industry is not always welcoming to her and her questions. That just makes her fight harder.
