PAWsitive Radio presented by Team Toby. Join host Charmaine Hammond, professional speaker, bestselling author and president of Team Toby as she interviews Rita of SparkySnacks.ca!
Rita’s dog, Sparky, was an amazing 17 year old cocker spaniel that passed away after a heroic battle with heart disease and cancer. He inspired Rita to be stronger, go further, and showed her that no hurdle is insurmountable. He was the bravest, strongest, and most cuddle-some pooch ever and will be so missed.
Sparky was diagnosed with cutaneous lymphoma and a dilated cardiomyopathy (flubby heart). He often struggled with his appetite due to his medical treatments, so Rita decided to bake treats and cook foods to satisfy his nose and ease his tummy! Sparky was a very fussy little pooch and it was ever the challenge to satisfy his palate and be tender with his tummy, so you know if he liked it, it was fussy pooch approved!

Treats for Troops is some thing I came up with here in Middlebury, Ct. I currently have a son serving in Afghanistan, and I send care packages regularly. Alot of his Army brothers are surprised when they see all the healthy and protein filled snacks we send to him. My son always shares his snacks and health & beauty products with the guys. He asked me back in February if i could send packages to a couple of his fellow Army brothers that have never got a package. I then came up with this "Treats for Troops" idea. We made a special box full of food and couple toys or magazines for each guy in his platoon. In late April I sent 12 boxes we labeled community boxes. where they opened and just shared among them all. And I just sent another 16 boxes full of goodies and a couple special boxes also. One of the names for these specials was new to me so I asked my son about this. He replied this is our linguist. He is not part of our platoon but has never got a care package. so we sent him special box. Some of these guys may not have family to send packages also it is very expensive to send packages. We came up with an idea of sponsorship on the boxes for 50.00 I can fill a box and ship it. The shipping is very expensive. or 1/2 a sponsor is 25.00 and this helps fills boxes and also can go to shipping costs. Here is a list of the items we are allowed to ship to the troops. I am going to continue to ship to the troops. My son and his platoon can no longer get boxes as their deployment time is up in October., but I am in contact with a couple higher rank officers that get me in touch with soldiers that have no home support.
