“And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy.” Luke 14:2
Jesus healed the man with dropsy on the Sabbath, a deed which violated Mosaic law. The self-righteous Pharisees had a legal problem with this.
The symbolic meaning of the passage is in the dropsy. Dropsy was a swelling of the body due to edema or excess buildup of body fluids. This is a type of fallen man swelled up in pride, arrogance, independence, self-indulgence, self-gratification, self-confidence, self-controller methods, and self-esteem. This typifies man’s main problem, the inflated self or ego. I (“ego”) needs to be crucified with Christ. This is only cure of self. Gal 2:20.
Our death, burial and resurrection with Christ through the Spirit is the only cure for the bloated self.

"Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
10 And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:" Colossians 2:8-10

He exchanged all that He was for all that we were. He became all that we are so that we might become all that He is.
Here is a list of what He exchanged:
His righteousness for our sin (sin nature); 2 Cor 5:21;
His uplifted life for our fallen life;
His fellowship for our loneliness;
His highness for our lowness;
His life for our death;
His strength for our weakness;
His riches for our poverty;
His union with God for our separation from God;
His freedom for our slavery;
His glory for our shame;
His blessing for our curse (Gal 3:10-13);
His overcoming for our being overwhelmed
His grace for our law;
His love for our hate;
His incorruption for our corruption;
As we take up His cross with Him daily we can avail ourselves of these exchanges:
Our bad death for His good death;
Our corruption for His incorruption;
Our sin for His righteousness;
Our fall for His being raised up;
Our old way for His newness of life;
Our pride for His humility;
Our temporal life for His eternal life;
Our selfish viewpoint for His divine viewpoint;
Our self-centeredness for His God-centeredness;
Our weakness for His power; 2 Cor 13:4;
Our chaos for His peace.
