  • How Pets Help Us Heal In Trauma Recovery

    in Pets

This episode is being rebroadcast from Michele’s original radio show, “Your Life After Trauma.”

The first really positive step Michele took toward her recovery came in the form of deciding to get a puppy. Mired in a deep depression and feeling overwhelmed by symptoms of PTSD didn’t seem like the right time to become a pet owner but she took the plunge and boy, was it the right decision!

Baylee and Michele met when he was just ten weeks old and they’ve been best buddies ever since. They’ve been through a lot together, including her complete recovery from PTSD. Having him around to mitigate the darkness (he’s fabulously funny and has a very emotional and interactive personality) brought a new light into her life that helped her begin to reach outside of her illness and find the necessary strength to heal.

This episode features three guests who discussed pets and their role in post-trauma recovery. Laura Westerfield, founder of Paws and People Assisting Wounded Warriors(ppaWWs), Nick Kutsukos of Elite K9 Academy in Jupiter and Janet Austin, joined Michele to discuss just how much pets can influence your healing journey.

Michele Rosenthal is a popular keynote speaker, award-winning author and post-trauma coach. Her shows combine scientific research, cutting-edge guests and personal stories that highlight the challenges and successes of deliberately deciding to change the direction of your life. Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercise (TRE®)

    in Health

My guest today is Dr. David Berceli, PhD, creator of TRE® (Tension, Stress & Trauma Release Exercise) which is an innovative series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. TRE® safely activates a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, calming down the nervous system. When this muscular shaking/vibrating mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return back to a state of balance.

TRE® is based on the fundamental idea, backed by recent research, that stress, tension and trauma is both psychological and physical. This natural shaking/vibrating response appears to be the body’s own built-in system for quieting down the brain and releasing muscular tension as a way of healing itself from chronic stress, tension and trauma

Dr. Berceli explains the potential therapeutic value of tremors in this Youtube video and is the author of Shake it Off Naturally.

This Youtube video is a testimonial of a man diagnosed with Essential Tremors who found TRE helpful.

What role can the prayers and meditations play in leading someone through recovery? Why is it so crucial?

What are some of the signs women can look for to determine if a man is likely to be a predator?

What are some key indicators that it might be time to seek professional counseling?

How someone can get help if they have faced or are currently facing sexual abuse?

TREATMENT & RECOVERY: The Under Graduate

    in Self Help

Show Topic:  It is usually after a 18-24 month treatment and recovery process that an addict who enters treatment, successfully completes treatment and all the necessary phases, is ready to present themselves for Graduation. The potential Under Graduate must submit what can only be called a summarized life story thesis focusing on where they were, where they are, and where they're going. We'll discuss what constitutes an Under Graduate. Though essentially they're all different, they all have had to accomplish similar goals to achieve UnderGraduate status.

TREATMENT and RECOVERY: OCGRadio One Year Annversary.............

    in Self Help

It's been a year since we went "live" with this idea to do a live podcast, talking about substance abuse treatment, recovery, Daytop, OCG, and all things in between as it relates to recovery.....or not!  Our 1st show (10/24/14) hastily came together to honor Daytop's founder, the Monsignor William B. O'Brien, who passed away on 10/19/2014. Although we didn't officially start our recovery themed podcast until November 18th, 2014, in reflection, it was fitting that our first show was honoring a man who made recovery possible for so many. We will do a little year in review.
