Meet Freeda Cathcart - ERA Candidate
Freeda Cathcart is running for the 17th House of Delegates in southwest Virginia. The Virginia Senate has recently passed the ERA but the House of Delegates has refused to bring it to a vote. Freeda promoted the petition to the White House to support the ERA to help make sure that the petition received enough votes before the deadline expired. She made sure that Virginia was well represented in the total vote count. Freeda is working hard to be elected this fall so that she can cast her vote for the ERA in Virginia's General Assembly. Freeda is the great-granddaughter of a suffragette who was a member of the League of Women Voters after women won the right to vote. Freeda is working to re-activate a local chapter of the League of Women Voters. Women need to use their power to vote to advance women's rights and they need to influence men to support their efforts. Freeda Cathcart has spent her life advocating for families in The Roanoke Valley and across Virginia. She's been a strong voice on issues of education and healthcare in Virginia. Freeda has helped shape public policy to improve the lives of middle class families and women. When elected Freeda will work hard in the General Assembly for families in our Commonwealth. A graduate of Roanoke College, Freeda has been a public school social studies teacher and has worked as a Reinsurance Specialist for Shenandoah Life Insurance Company. Freeda also has worked for the Child Health Investment Partnership as a Parent Educator where she helped families with newborn babies throughout the Roanoke Valley from different socioeconomic backgrounds.
As an appointee of Governor Tim Kaine, Freeda served as a Consumer Representative on the Advisory Board for Midwifery.

Hybrid Jazz - with Janice Rhosalle Littlejohn & Our Guests!
If you remember the multi-talented Janice Rhoshalle Littlejohn from the first interview that we did, you know what FUN we had! Tuesday, May 21st, promises more of same. But we also might hit a nerve. You would think that the subject of "Women in Jazz" wouldn't be a big deal in 2013, but there are many who would rather not discuss it. Janice and I relish that idea :) My co-host for the day is the director and producer of a fantastic documentary called, "...But Can She Play?" In it, wondrous women on instruments are featured - and their stories are told.
We'll have more of those tales when we hear from three (at least!) formidable talents on the Jazz scene.. One of the most visible musicians in Contemporary Jazz, Gail Jhonson, joins us! Her keyboard wizardry has caught the ears of an international audience - and her CD, "Herstory", writes another chapter in the evolution of strong female composition. The creation of "Jazz in Pink" is another testimony to this woman's creativity.
Grace Kelly just turned 21, but she has lived music more than most twice her age! Adept at saxophone, she has spun heads with her expertise and vision. Concerts don't lie - you can hear the maturity in her playing via "Live at Sculler's." Grace was a recent guest on the show - and is excited to be able to participate again, especially since she is featured in Janice's film!
In it as well is Hailey Niswanger, also a saxophonist of rare maturity, inspired by John Coltrane. Hailey has worked closely with Esperanza Spalding and a myriad of household names. She has been recognized by Berklee as someone special - an educator as well as performer. One listen to "Confeddie" and "The Keeper" and you'll hear HOW special!
The fun starts at ONE p.m. Eastern!

Hybrid Jazz Welcomes The Potomac Jazz & Seafood Festival!
There is so much to celebrate in the Mid-Atlantic region - and one of the most anticipated of those celebrations is The Potomac Jazz & Seafood Festival!
For one Saturday in July, everybody at Colton's Point (overlooking the beautiful Potomac) becomes "family" - that's how the closeknit organizers feel about their guests. Kim Cullins is the most articulate spokesperson for the Festival - and she will join us on Thursday, May 9th! Kim works for the Museum Division of St. Mary's County Department of Recreation and Parks. So, yes, she's our Amy Poehler :-D
Kim will talk about the urgency of getting your tickets - they go on sale on the first of June. There are only 800 sold each year and they go QUICKLY! We think that's going to be the case for this year, especially - because the acts are different than what you'd normally see at an outdoor venue. AND this lineup is explosive!
Jessy J opens up the Festival at three - yes! Following our sultry saxstress - from Columbus, Ohio - The Urban Jazz Coalition! Seven musicians = 7th Heaven! Try to stay in your seat (we dare you!) for the closing act: EAST BAY SOUL! Indeed, true funk soldiers will gather in historic Maryland for a NEW historic occasion - the day that The Potomac Jazz & Seafood Festival punches a hole in the sky! Greg Adams and his fabulous merry men are bringing their Oakland hybrid Jazz, Funk and Soul to fans who will be begging for mercy before the night is over. We might as well call it The Potomac Jazz and Seafood Love Fest :-D
Greg Adams will be stopping by to say hello on Tuesday - and we don't know who ELSE might be joining him! It's sure to be a great time - and a history lesson - wait until you hear the background of the Festival!
See you at one for the fun - The Chat Room is waiting.

THE ALL CARIBBEAN JAZZ SHOW
Barbados and Trinidad have been censored by the USA for their Intellectual Property Rights practiceswithin the recent weeks. Fittingly I'll be rebroadcasting an interview I did with Heather Baldwin McDowell, an Intellectual Property Rights Practitioner. This should be of interest to artists, musicians etc.
