Teresa of Ávila was born Teresa Ali Fatim Corella Sanchez de Capeda y Ahumada in Ávila, Spain. Less than twenty years before Teresa was born in 1515, Columbus opened up the Western Hemisphere to European colonization. Two years after she was born, Luther started the Protestant Reformation.
When she finally chose religious life, she did so because she though that it was the only safe place for someone as prone to sin as she was. Once installed at the Carmelite convent permanently, she started to learn and practice mental prayer, in which she "tried as hard as I could to keep Jesus Christ present within me..."
For years she hardly prayed at all "under the guise of humility." She thought as a wicked sinner she didn't deserve to get favors from God.
When she was 41, a priest convinced her to go back to her prayer. As she started to pray again, God gave her spiritual delights.
At the age of 43, she became determined to found a new convent that went back to the basics of a contemplative order: a simple life of poverty devoted to prayer. At 51, she felt it was time to spread her reform movement. She braved burning sun, ice and snow, thieves, and rat-infested inns to found more convents. But those obstacles were easy compared to what she face from her brothers and sisters in religious life.
She is the founder of the Discalced Carmelites. In 1970 she was declared a Doctor of the Church for her writing and teaching on prayer, one of two women to be honored in this way.
St. Teresa is the patron saint of Headache sufferers. Her symbol is a heart, an arrow, and a book. She was canonized in 1622. Her Feast Day is October 15.
The Laughing Redhead is Teresa Roberts Logan.
She's made a living with humor for several decades, on page and on stage.
Teresa writes and draws humor for publication, for standup comedy, for storytelling, for cartoons . . . as well as spooky stuff, and provides content for publishing, animation, books, and product.
As a professional artist and illustrator, she has done thousands of paintings and drawings, kabillions (math!) of cartoons and jokes for products such as animations, cocktail napkins, partyware, tissues, and greeting cards. She was nominated for a Reuben Award by the National Cartoonists Society for her greeting cards. Currently she's working on a graphic novel, HAINT BLUE, (an autobiographical supernatural story), some horror short stories, and a web comic, FOG OF WORRY.
Books which contain her funny stuff (cartoons and columns): “The Older I Get, The Less I Care” (Andrews McMeel Publishing), “Laughing Out Loud” (Hallmark Gift Books), “Humor for a Sister’s Heart” (Howard Publishing), “Mug of Woe,” “All Woe Great and Small,” “Woe of Dating,” (just released) “Wreck the Halls,” (Mug of Woe Publishing).
Teresa has done a lot of standup comedy and storytelling, through such venues as: HBO, Comedy Channel, A&E, Catch A Rising Star, Gotham Comedy Club, The Metropolitan Room NYC, Zanies, and Comedy Works . . . and was an opening act for Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres, Kevin Nealon, Dana Carvey, Drew Carey, and Paula Poundstone, as well as many other famous and not–so-famous funny people. "Rich Jeni called me 'the Meryl Streep of comedy' and I thought that was so cool that he loved my dialects and accents so much. But one day, when he found out that’s what I thought, he laughed really hard and told me, 'No, I meant you have the same NOSE!'"

“Habits allow us to not think about what we’re doing . . . giving us the illusion of ease. We are under the illusion of ease, not thinking about what we’re doing – breathing the same old way, moving the same old way, thinking the same old way we check out of the present and out of happiness itself.” ~ Alex Levin

A show dedicated to "True Life Experiences." The Life & Motivation of Actress Teresa Graves in her latest role as "Gene," on Tyler Perry's sitcom "If Loving You Is Wrong." "In many situations, most people only get one chance. But few of us are blessed to have a second chance to prove themselves worthy. Teresa, is one of the lucky ones, she is a two-time survivor of breast cancer – diagnosed in 1997 and 2007, in which the latter she underwent chemotherapy. A talented performer, Graves also had a second chance at a career in entertainment. Starting out dancing and acting at an early age, she stopped to enter the workforce. For over 20 years, she worked in Corporate America for technology leader, IBM Corporation where she served as an independent training consultant. A creative by nature, Graves created a training manual for the company and was afforded the opportunity to travel across the country and abroad in this role. Her experience includes work as a plus-sized model and dancing as a member of several cultural dance companies in Atlanta. She has appeared in TV ONE’s “Fatal Attractions,” Kirk Franklin's music video for his Grammy Award-winning song "I Smile", as well as various short films and commercials. Most recently, she has gained notoriety in her role as Gene, the nosey neighbor, in Tyler Perry’s "If Loving You is Wrong" on the OWN Network."

Gems of Wisdom is a soul sanctuary, for women all ages, all denominations or no denomination, gather for deep listening, creative reflection and authentic soul-sharing. Rev Brigid Waszcznak will lead us in a Wisdom Circle later in the program.
We will share a circle that begins by exploring a wisdom quote and go where the Spirit leads. The Circle is a place to honor our flowering alongside our brokenness. These gatherings feel new and ancient at the same time. The teacher is the Circle itself.
Every waking moment we talk to ourselves about the things we experience. Our self-talk, the thoughts we communicate to ourselves, in turn control the way we feel and act. ~ John Lembo
