The phenomenon of limited cellular division was first observed by Leonard Hayflick, and is now referred to as the Hayflick limit.
Significant discoveries were made by the team led by Professor Elizabeth Blackburn at the University of California (UCSF).
Advocates of human life extension promote the idea of lengthening the telomeres in certain cells through temporary activation of telomerase (by drugs), or possibly permanently by gene therapy.
They reason that this would extend human life. So far these ideas have not been proven in humans.
However, it has been hypothesized that there is a trade-off between cancerous tumor suppression and tissue repair capacity, in that lengthening telomeres might slow aging and in exchange increase vulnerability to cancer (Weinstein and Ciszek, 2002).
We got an outstanding review in On Milwaukee, when the film played at the Milwaukee Film Festival. Maxim wrote a great review (while omitting ½ of the directorial team!). Also, friend of The Immortalists Patrick Brice (director of CREEP) gave us a shout out in Sac Town Magazine.

Call in today to ask about your most pressing health concerns! TELOMERE LENGTH AND LIVING LONGER..IS THAT TRUE??
Host Dr. Kevin Passero and his special guest Dr. William Andrews will be discussing the anti-aging potential of telomere biology.
William H. Andrews, Ph.D., has worked in the biotech industry for 30 years, focusing the last 18 years on finding ways to extend human lifespan through work with lengthening telomeres, which are genetic structures found at the ends of our chromosomes. Short telomeres have been associated with the aging process, and preserving or lengthening telomeres is thought to be one way we might reach for "the fountain of youth." Dr. Andrews is presently the founder, President and CEO of Sierra Sciences, a biotech company focused exclusively on developing pharmaceuticals that will induce the production of telomerase (the enzyme that re-lengthens telomeres) in all our cells.
EP# 313 – Dr. Ed Park – Can Telomere Activation Allow Us To Live To 200 Years Old & What Are The Imp
Today we spoke with Dr. Ed Park author of the book Telomere Timebombs (I highly recommend it!) and he’s also the man behind the product TA-65 which we talked about along with his other product Recharge, which we are going to start taking soon. We’ll report back to you as to our experience with it. […]

Today's guest Dr. Andrews has worked in the biotech industry for 28 yrs, the last 15 yrs finding ways to extend human lifespan through the intervention of telomere shortening in human cells.
Dr. Andrews earned his Ph.D. in Molecular and Population Genetics at the University of Georgia in 1981. He was a Senior Scientist at Armos Corporation and Codon Corporation, Director of Molecular Biology at Codon and at Geron Corporation, and Director of Technology Development at EOS Biosciences.
While Director of Molecular Biology at Geron Corporation from 1992 to 1997, Dr. Andrews was one of the principal discoverers of both the RNA and protein components of human telomerase and was awarded 2nd place as National Inventor of the Year in 1997 for this work.
Dr. Andrew's new book Curing Aging is now available at www.sierrasci.com/?p=book.

Rick Shapiro is an author, prolific law blogger, inventor (holding 18 U.S. patents and various international patents), and is a practicing trial attorney.
Rick is the author of Taming the Telomeres. He researched “Taming” for nearly 3 years before completing the fiction thriller. He drew from his experiences as a trial attorney, and as a Capitol Hill staff assistant before law school.
Rick resided in the Washington, DC area during college and law school, and explored Middleburg, Virginia, Georgetown, and several of the geographical areas that appear in Taming the Telomeres.
Today we will be discussing his new book: Taming the Telomeres

How Telomere Research is Turning Back the Aging Clock

Are Telomeres The Key To Aging And Cancer? Inside the nucleus of a cell, our genes are arranged along twisted, double-stranded molecules of DNA called chromosomes. At the ends of the chromosomes are stretches of DNA called telomeres, which protect our genetic data, make it possible for cells to divide, and hold some secrets to how we age and get cancer. Telomeres have been compared with the plastic tips on shoelaces, because they keep chromosome ends from fraying and sticking to each other, which would destroy or scramble an organism's genetic information.
Yet, each time a cell divides, the telomeres get shorter. When they get too short, the cell can no longer divide; it becomes inactive or "senescent", or it dies. This shortening process is associated with aging, cancer, and a higher risk of death. So telomeres also have been compared with a bomb fuse.
Every American needs to understand that the entire national press is controlled, and is simply giving you the "news" you are supposed to have. Very soon, all alternative sources of news, including this website, will be shut down. That time draws ever closer. "In order to put public opinion into our hands we must bring it into a state of bewilderment by giving expression from all sides to so many contradictory opinions and for such length of time as will suffice to make the [average person] lose their heads in the labyrinth and come to see that the best thing is to have no opinion of any kind, in matters political."
