    Christopher Weber-Fürst: The Future is Female

    in Women

    Are you ready to break through the gender inequality and follow your Inner Voice to freedom and happiness?

    Christopher Weber-Fürst is currently a life coach who firmly believes that women hold the key to creating a better and more sustainable tomorrow, and that all women worldwide need to be supported to live from their inner voice. His book, The Future is Female, is a guide to understanding why the transformation of ourselves, our organizations and our society is so vital to creating a more inclusive, harmonious, and sustainable future. He believes that coaching is about finding the best version of yourself.

    Christopher draws attention to the importance of raising awareness of both men and women to be more conscious about their choices and behaviors and how taking "respons-ability" for those choices can change the world. He’s lived and worked in several countries and has been a large scale farm owner, worked with immigrants and traumatized juveniles, and was an executive for a telecom company in both sales and marketing.

    in Internet

    [Tech glitch zapped the last 25 min. We're going to have a do-over and record that part again.]

    There’s a lot going on in broadband in Oregon. Communities such as Sandy are upgrading their infrastructure significantly, or planning their initial networks. Co-op are energized and several of them are planning to launch broadband initiatives. The rural telephone companies are providing creative solutions that are getting communities connected.

    Joseph Franell, General Manager and CEO of Eastern Oregon Telecom, discusses some of the opportunities and the challenges that communities face here in the state. Gigabit Nation is broadcasting live from the Oregon Connections Telecommunications Conference, which draws statewide attendees to share ideas, experiences and knowledge about telecommunications.

    Franell and Gigabit Nation host Craig Settles highlight:

    some of the challenges with bridging the broadband divide in education;
    addressing the urban/rural divide;
    what is the "right" model to deploy gigabit networks in rural markets;
    how has the USF/ICC reform impacted rural carriers and how are they moving forward;
    what are the pluses and minuses of the Google Fiber model.

    Sandy, OR’s move to gigabit broadband is one of the many case stories in Settles’ new book, Building the Gigabit City, Vol. 2.

  • The View Up Here talks Canada's Digital Future with OpenMedia.ca

    in Politics

    October 19, 2015. General election day in Canada. Perhaps the last chance to prevent the irreversible changes to the country that Harper and his machine want to execute. The number of issues caused by CPC malfeasance to this point is never ending. They have had a decade to pervert this once respected nation into insignificance. Internationally and domestically.

    Since 2008, OpenMedia.ca has been a leading voice in keeping Canadians aware, informed and able to counteract the measures taken against digital rights. The Declaration of Internet Freedom has five fundamental principles. Expression. Access. Openness. Innovation. Privacy.

    Shaped by more than 250,000 people and launched last week, "Canada's Digital Future" is a crowd-sourced election platform packed with ideas from everyday citizens. This initiative of digital rights is urging people to consider Canada's digital future when casting their vote this election. While OpenMedia won’t be endorsing any political party, it does plan to meet the main parties and report back as to which are most committed to implementing its platform. Thousands of people have already pledged to vote for the future of the Internet in the upcoming election.

    “Whether it’s telecom price-gouging, reckless spying legislation, or abusive copyright notices, failed digital policies are hurting Canadians,” said OpenMedia’s communications manager David Christopher. “Young people in particular are speaking up for a better way forward, because Canada can’t afford to keep falling behind our international counterparts. That’s why this election will be the most important Canadian Internet users have ever faced.” David joins us to tell us about how your digital rights are under attack. And what OpenMedia.ca is doing on our behalf.

  • The Impact on Business of Deregulation: The Case of Energy

    in Business

    On August 19, my guest will be Susan Mazonson, an independent associate with Viridian Energy.   She is an expert at building wealth by spotting trends and industry developments.

    Her career began as one of the first female college hires at AT&T, part of the “high potential” management program.   Subsequently, she was recruited to lead the charge of New Business Development for the second largest US telecom equipment manufacturer.  There, she created the business plan for the infrastructure to power the emerging U.S. cellular radio networks, referred to today as mobile or wireless.

    When deregulation of the telecom industry occurred, Susan leveraged that by starting two boutique consulting firms, advising incumbent carriers on how to compete in this new paradigm shift of competition, innovation, and technological advancement.  Among her clients were AT&T, Verizon, Alcatel-Lucent, all the Bell Operating Companies, and many other market entrants creating new niches.

    After riding the telecom deregulation wave for nearly 30 years, Susan recognized that the deregulation of the energy sector was the next “once ever” opportunity to not only create substantial wealth, but at the same time, do good for the environment.   She now offers simple, innovative, renewable energy solutions for consumers and businesses.  And she trains, mentors and coaches business professionals and entrepreneurs to create a part-time, recession-proof, passive, residual income, by sharing the benefits of choosing renewable energy options.

    Susan has a B.S. degree in Applied Mathematics from Brown University and an MBA in Marketing and Finance from University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.

    Scared of China: Telecom and U.S. National Security

    in Politics

    In this day and age of intense partisan rancor in Washington, one thing that brings Republicans and Democrats together is their distrust of China. And one Chinese company that both the left and the right seem to love to hate is Huawei Technologies, the largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the world.
    Just in October, the House Intelligence Committee released a report warning the U.S. government and private companies against doing business with Huawei. The Chairman and the Ranking Member of the Committee  pointed out that Huawei can insert malicious hardware or software implants into its equipment, and allow the Chinese government to wage cyberwarfare, conduct economic espionage, and disrupt U.S. telecom networks that affect everything from electric power grids to banking and finance systems to rail and shipping channels.
    Mr. William Plummer, Vice President of External Affairs at Huawei, disputes the accusations against Huawei and talks about the company's relationship with the Chinese government, the vulnerabilities of the global telecommunications supply chain, and the politics of the U.S.-China relationship.
