Ed Roberts Born Jan. 23, 1939, in California and died on March 14, 1995.
In the late 60's and early 70's the University of California at Berkeley was nationally known as the home of radical politics and progressive social movements. Mario Savio and the 1964 free speech movement set the tone and developed the model for the movements that followed such as the Yippies and the Black Panthers, particularly influencing campus anti-war movements and tactics for student involvement in ethnic and racial social movements.
Many students took note and developed progressive movements to benefit various causes. Among the students on the Berkeley campus was Ed Roberts. The university hesitated to admit Ed as he was severely disabled from polio which he contracted as a teenager. He had virtually no functional movement and was dependent on a respirator to breath. "We've Tried Cripples Before and It Didn't Work", said the university. They reluctantly admitted Ed in 1962 and arranged for him to live in the campus medical facility, Cowell Hall. His brother, also a student, served as an on campus PA, often pushing Ed from class to class in an old manual wheelchair. I'm honored to have our great advocate and friend, Les Paul Morgan as well as 14 year veteran of ILC work, Angel Watson as we talk about the incredible effect CIL's have had in our community over the last few decades.
Currently, the most comprehensive study of neurological functioning, seems to be the "full" neuropsychological testing. Some doctors push just the MMPI-2 at our community and call it and accurate test of cortical and neurological functioning. It's not a full test and it's often used in the wrong way to make it seem like someone is malingering.Tonight, I'll go over what malingering stands for and why this test is more harmful than helpful in litigation after a brain injury. We will go over the many test's that should be done to consider testing "complete" and accurate. I will discuss "GAF" scores and their meaning. There will also be updates from the Teamhilevel from the Teamhilevel group as well as the new 4peer11 hotline. 424-243-9540 to listen in on your phone, press "1" to ask a question. www.braininjuryradio.com to join in on the live chat during the show.

Join Gordon and Dj on Monday for what should be a very educational episode on the law, personal injury and brain injuries. Mr. Johnson has litigated brain injury cases in many states as lead and co councel. He is the creator of tbivoices, waiting.com and has a very informational site, tbilaw.com. He's past president of a legal litigation organization and contributes to dozens of sites throughout the internet.
Mr. Johnson has appeared in Court/taken depositions personally in the following states: California, Washington, North Dakota, Colorado, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Maryland, New York, Connecticut and Virginia. There are many ways that folks get hurt and even more ways these injuries are litigated. The Longshore harbor workers compensation laws are not the same as getting into a slip and fall at work, or even contruction law injuries. You need to know what laws you fall under, then find a board certified trial attorney. Mr. Johnson will give some great support on this show and will stay the full hour and a half to take calls. This show is not paying Mr. Johnson to be on here, he's not replacing your current attorney, so please just take this advice and use it to the best of your needs.
424-243-9540 is the call in number. Press 1 to put your hand up and go into the caller cue and I will bring you on.
Dj Asselin is a survivor and advocate for Traumatic Brain Injury. In 2005, he experienced a severe blow to the head in the course of his job, which led to a serious brain bleed. He was initially taken to a hospital with no Neurosurgeon. His diagnosis was correct, but the facility he ended up in, was not capable of dealing with his Level 1 Trauma. His journey through recovery was long and arduous. He entered into a lengthy coma, underwent cranial surgery, spent a protracted stay at an extended care facility, and continues his recovery today.
The lessons he's learned are valuable for others recovering from Brain Injury or any number of serious health conditions. So often these life changing circumstances happen out of the blue, and people have no way of preparing. After the life changing event, they don't know where to turn.
Dj has created an Internet group on Facebook, called Teamhilevel that facilitates support for people with a variety of conditions. His extensive research, lengthy recovery process and skillful use of social media as a means of support, has been a life-saver for so many people in need. He's a regular guest on BTR's Brain Injury Show and an invaluable resource to those lucky enough to find him in their time of need. Tonight he will share some tips that he's gleaned in his process, that will raise awareness to those already lost in a medical maze, or who will be facing one in the future.
