Philosopher Dr. Diana Hsieh interviewed Professor Robert Garmong about "Love and Sex in China" in this episode of Philosophy in Action Radio.
What are the traditional ideas about love and sex in Chinese culture? How did those ideas change in Mao's time? How do Chinese men and women approach romantic and sexual relationships today? Is homosexuality accepted? What is the place of mistresses and prostitutes? Moreover, Robert Garmong told us of the pitfalls of marrying a Chinese woman – and explained why he did exactly that anyway.
Robert Garmong is Lecturer of Business and Liberal Arts at the Surrey International Institute of Dongbei University of Finance and Economics in Dalian, China. He studied economics and political science at the University of Chicago, and has a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Texas (Austin). His blog is "Professor in Dalian."

Our daughter, Angela is a brilliant person. She is just as comfortable diving into chemistry or physics as she is singing and performing on stage. She was debating between majoring in physics, math, business, or theater. But we raised her to have fun and school was part of that and all the sciences and math were just as fun as theater. I urged her to find a job or an opportunity somewhere to figure out what she wanted to do finish a degree in. Next, she announces that she is going to China for 6 months to teach English. That was 4 years ago.
Since moving to China, Angela has become fluent in Mandarin and she will share some of her secrets of learning this difficult language with us. She is in a masters program for Chinese Travel and Tourism at a Chinese university. She performs all over China and has even been on Chinese TV several times. See what Angela is up to on her website.
Angela has met some incredible people, learned a whole new culture, and is having a grand adventure.

Gold has been used as currency since 643 B.C.
1861 US paper currency was created by U.S. Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase.
1913 the Federal Reserve was created.
March 3, 1933 Pres. Roosevelt closed the banks as a result of the run on gold.
July 22, 1944 the Bretton Woods agreement central banks had to maintain fixed exchange rates between their currencies and the dollar.
1960 the U.S. held $19.4 billion in gold, enough to cover the $18.7 billion in foreign dollars outstanding.
1970, the U.S. only held $14.5 billion in gold against foreign dollar holdings of $45.7 billion
August 15, 1971 Pres. Nixon changed the dollar/gold relationship to $38 per ounce, and the Fed stopped redeeming dollars with gold.
1973 The U.S. government re-priced gold to $42 per ounce, and then decoupled the value of the dollar from gold altogether. The price of gold quickly shot up to $120 per ounce in the free market.
1973 Nixon and King Faisal of Saudi Arabia created the petrodollar system. Nixon asked Faisal to accept only US dollars as payment for oil and to invest any excess profits in US Treasury bonds, notes, and bills. In exchange, Nixon pledged to protect Saudi oilfields from the Soviet Union and other potential aggressors, such as Iran and Iraq (offered military protection).
Published on Apr 30, 2014: The Ministry of Finance on President Putin's order yesterday accelerated the opening of the St. Petersburg Exchange (SPE), where prices for Russian oil and natural gas will be set in rubles instead of US dollars.
