Cross Encounters News: The Pledge of Allegiance
A daily, 30-minute program with host, Tony Miano, covering the news of the day, from a Christian worldview.
On today's show, Tony will offer commentary on Oregon House Bill 3014. Tony wil talk about Oregonian reporter Harry Esteve's article. http://www.oregonlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2013/04/daily_pledge_of_allegiance_req.html
From the article: "[The bill] requires flags in all public and public charter school classrooms, and requires the schools to offer a daily recitation of the pledge for all students. The bill doesn't make it mandatory for students to stand or recite the pledge, but some lawmakers cautioned that students who don't join in would be stigmatized."

Close-Up with Helen Olian
Returning to Close-Up Talk Radio is author Helen Olian. Fascinated with writing and animals since her youth, Helen wrote countless stories for her own viewing. After suffering a serious accident and becoming wheelchair bound, Helen decided to turn her passion into magnificent tales for all to see.
Over her professional career Helen has completed 13 books of various themes, 8 of which are “doggie” themed including The Doggy Trip and The Doggy Farm. Helen’s most successful work to date is The Aliens, which was featured on a list of top 100 bestsellers on www.amazon.com. “This is such a tremendous honor to be able to do what I love and see people appreciate it. I write animal themed rhyme verse books for children and it’s exciting to see their reactions at book signings,” exclaims Olian.
Helen is currently completing the ninth and final installment of doggy-themed books entitled The Master Doggy. “To wrap up the series, this tale follows a down-to-earth dog whose boss celebrates his birthday at the office, has a hill near his house and becomes master of the hill. It sticks with the rhyme verse patterns with wonderful illustrations to match. He becomes master yet remains humble.”
Sticking with her youth targeted books, Helen is also working on a bedtime children’s book to help kids sleep at night. Helen’s books are wonderfully illustrated and easily relatable to children ages eight and up. All of Helen’s works are available through Maypole Books, which she founded in her home state of New Mexico.

Part 10: Close-Up Talk Radio spotlights Judith Bonner
Imperial Beach, CA – While families with two working parents are increasingly the norm, what they gain in financial stability they often lose in opportunities to effectively discipline their children and build lifelong family relationships.
Judith Bonner is the author of Stress-free Discipline, an authoritative guide to child rearing offering an effective long-term plan for bonding and personal growth.
“I wrote this book because I wanted to reduce the stress in families,” says Bonner. “Stress-free Discipline can be applied to any child in any family. It helps build bonds that can’t be broken.”
According to Bonner, effective parenting can’t be done passively. Stress-free Discipline’s system helps parents develop a child’s life skills to gradually eliminate the potential for poor behavior by encouraging the right behavior. At the same time, consistent consequences for the child's poor choices maintain gentle pressure toward growth.
“People are so overwhelmed and stressed, but there is hope,” says Bonner. “Parenting should be fun. You don’t have to work so hard being a parent you can’t enjoy it. Children will either steal your time through rebellion or they’ll give you their time as a gift.”
Where Stress-Free Discipline helped parents bridge the gap between home and school, Bonner has developed a series of corporate workshops to help parents bridge their own gap between to home and work. Through a proactive program designed to help relieve their employees’ emotional stress, corporations can reduce turnover, improve efficiency and increase productivity.
“Corporations need to be more empathetic toward the people who work for them,” says Bonner.

Part 3: Close-Up Talk Radio spotlights author Mary Verdick
Middletown, CT – Mary Verdick is the author of romance suspense novels for women, all written within the last 10 years. Her books Indian Time, Don’t Let the Good Life Pass You By, Maybe This Time, As Long As He Needs Me, That Certain Summer, and her most recent novel, Another Time, Another Place, are available online and at bookstores across the country.
A former teacher, Verdick served as editor for the Weekly Reader for 16 years, where she authored a series of acclaimed young adult novels, Pal Paperbacks, which can still be found in many school libraries.
“Writing for children is a unique skill. Not everyone can do that,” explains Verdick. “But writing for adults, you can explore ideas with more depth. But I never sat down and thought, ‘I’m going to write a woman’s romance suspense novel filled with intrigue.’ That’s just the way they turn out."
This April, Verdick published her latest novel, entitled Another Time, Another Place, a tale of two women and two love affairs two generations apart, eerily similar in hopes and intensity.
“I think it’s something you’re born with, a desire to write,” says Verdick. “I can immerse myself in the characters and the story. It’s a cathartic experience.”
