Paul Avallone, USA "spent three-plus years in Afghanistan as a Green Beret then an embedded civilian journalist." Paul Avallone is the author of Tattoo Zoo: A Novel of the Afghan War.
According to the book description Tattoo Zoo "is a novel that could only have been written by a veteran of more than three years in the Afghan War -- as a Green Beret then a civilian embedded journalist. America's longest war is compressed into a charged forty-six hours with the GIs of the Tattoo Zoo platoon trapped fighting a fierce Taliban in a nowhere piece of picturesque real estate called Wajma Valley, as they are left hung out to dry by a politically correct four-star command hell-bent on prosecuting them for war crimes or just letting them die in place.
You will be taken into the heart and soul of the American soldier -- from private to general. You will be with the soldiers, you will be with the command, and you will be swept into the Afghan War on a visceral level of extreme verisimilitude. If you've been in the war, you will recognize and feel those hours and days and months, and you will want others to read this to understand what you lived.
If you haven't been to the war and only know Afghanistan from blips you've seen on TV news, It will put you there, and you'll know it. No need here to detail the characters, but you can count on remembering Wolfe and Doc Eberly and Redcloud and St Claire and Dove and Finkle and Victoria Marshall and a whole slew more. This is a big novel, and not meant for the casual reader expecting some throw-away weekend-read thriller. There is nothing pretentious or artificially artistic or overly intellectual about the language here; just the opposite, the reading is easy. In fact, there's enough character and story and conflict here that there's no need for false literary styling meant to impress other writers and professors of hoity-toity MFA programs."
Tattoos. More and more Americans are getting inked according to a recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. In 1999, approx 21% of the respondents said someone in their household had a tattoo, and today that number has risen to 40 percent. Military veterans and those currently serving in the armed forces have the most ink -- 36 % have a tattoo. I’m a fan of tattoos as well with 5 small ones in various private locations. But mostly I’m a huge fan of tattoo artists and fascinated by their artistry and ability to create amazing designs on the human canvas. Tattoo artist Chris Delaney established Almighty Ink in 2002 in Asbury Park as a private studio to focus on creating large format full body tattoos for discerning tattoo enthusiasts. If you want a tiny butterfly on your ankle, you’ll have to go elsewhere. Chris began tattooing at the age of 16 and purchased his first professional tattoo equipment in 1989 and began implementing his vision of custom tattoos. He is proficient in most tattoo styles but prefers to work in a bold and expressive fashion, as well as exploring the more obscure low-brow art genres. His influences vary widely, and he consequently enjoys a special clientele that allow him to freely express his creative ideas. Chris chooses his clients based on their unique tattoo desires and as to whether it fits his personal style. After the interview, please visit After Hours At Jersey Coastal Live.

Humans ave been marking skin for over 5000 years. It's not a new or trendy concept really; but it is a powerful concept. Like a wig, make up or a new pair of sneakers, a tattoo is a form of artistic expression for the self.
There are people who debate tattoo's with passion; either for or against them. Where do you stand? On the far extremes or somewhere in the middle?
Why do people get tattoos?
Why did you get a tattoo?
Is where someone has a tattoo significant?
Can a tattoo be healing?
Let's talk tattoos.... join me!

NELLY THE ARTIST "… It was all dream…As a young kid, Nelly, The Artist knew that one day, she would be covered in tattoos. They have always appealed to her; not just the art, but the concept of existing within the art. Nelly didn’t realize that her high school past time of drawing on classmates with markers, creating authentic tattoo designs, would evolve into becoming a tattoo artist."

PAUL TIMMAN, whose celebrity clients include Angelina Jolie, Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore, Marc Anthony and Mark Wahlberg, will be joining us tonight as we explore the art of tattooing. He'll be talking with Xena and our funny, articulate and occasional co-host Thea, who arranged for Paul's appearance on the Salon.
Paul is an award-winning tattoo artist, based in Los Angeles, known not only for his celebrity clientele but his style and artistry in body art. He also developed the art of porcelain dinnerware with designs based on his tattoos. That got him on the Metropolitan Home Design 100 List. Paul's goal is to "transform tattooing into everyday objects," so he's also begun working with ACME Studio which produces and markets writing instruments, stationery accessories, jewelry and more. Paul's work has been featured on fab.com and the CBS News and in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times, among numerous other newspapers and magazines. His work can be seen on the website Images of Paul Timman .
Join us as we learn about the history and heritage of tattooing, why Paul prefers "old school technique," his contemporary porcelain dinnerware and designs with ACME Studio. And of course we'll ask the first question for every person new to body art--"Does it hurt?"!
