Jacqueline Nwobu has a simple message for couples planning their honeymoon: forget the Carribbean. “We have a feature on our website called The Pearls of Africa that we started after our research showed a wealth of great honeymoon destinations there,” the Munaluchi Bridal magazine editor tells Nightly Candy Chat host Nana-Adwoa Ofori. “Now we’re out to change the perception of Africa, so when people think of the continent, they don’t automatically associate it with poverty and suffering. We want them to realize there’s surfing and blue water and beaches and skydiving. Any activity you can think of can be done over there.”
Portrayed by Carrie Underwood in the recently released movie, “Soul Surfer,” Sarah Rachel Hill was instrumental in helping surfer Bethany Hamilton through a tragic shark attack that left her with one arm. Sarah’s own past, which include suffering a broken neck and back in a surfing accident, helped prepare her and equip her in ministry. Sarah serves as a missionary on the Island of Kauai where she leads one of the largest student ministries on the Island. Grounded in her devotion an love for Christ, her training allows her to recognize those in need and gives her the ability to reach out to them. After growing up in a tough and abusive home, through God’s grace, she continues impacting lives for God’s kingdom on Kauai…and beyond. She drops by to chat on Tuesday, April 30, at 7pm EST.
Our guest this morning is Andrea Zislis. Andrea is the Chief Environmental Officer for the Zislis Group. She also works on special projects and charity events.
A South Bay native, Andrea was born and raised in San Pedro, growing up playing soccer and surfing, and competing on her high school surf team.
After moving to Manhattan Beach in 2001, she worked as a manager for the Zislis’ Group’s Rock'N Fish restaurant in Manhattan Beach and later served as Shade Hotel’s HR Manager. In 2010, Andrea served on the first Environmental Task Force for the City of Manhattan Beach and chaired the waste and recycling subcommittee which assisted the City with the waste contract renewal.
Passionate about the environment and charity work, Andrea splits her time between both while raising four children. Andrea and her husband, Michael Zislis, support many local charities through the hotel as well as the group’s South Bay restaurants that include The Strand House, Rock’N Fish, Rock & Brews and Circa.
Shade Hotel is hosting the fifth annual Open Toe Show Party on Sunday, April 14 for the One Small Voice Foundation, which supports cutting edge research on a leading cause of blindness in children: optic nerve hypoplasia, or ONH. This vitally important research is being done at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and is a priority for the Zislis' since their daughter Milla suffers from ONH.
Andrea joins us this morning to discuss the event, the cause and to share her family's personal experience dealing with ONH. http://www.onesmallvoicefoundation.org/
