America has an addiction problem, but it's not just with drugs or alcohol—it's with sugar. Sugar is in almost everything we eat—not just in the highly processed, fructose-soaked snacks we love, but hidden in “healthier” foods that most people wouldn't expect, such as bread, fruit, and dairy. The side effects aren't just weight gain—they're premature aging and increased risk of diabetes, atherosclerosis, heart disease, and even cataracts. In The Sugar Detox: Lose Weight, Feel Great, and Look Years Younger by nutritionist Brooke Alpert and dermatologist Dr. Patricia Farris, readers are given everything they need to know to begin a healthier lifestyle through an easy, low-sugar diet. By eliminating sugar and incorporating small changes, people can lead a healthier lifestyle and look years younger. Tune in to this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer talks to co-author, Brooke Alpert, MS, RD, CDN about her best-selling book, The Sugar Detox Diet. America has an addiction problem, but it’s not just with drugs or alcohol—it’s with sugar. Sugar is in almost everything we eat—not just in the highly processed, fructose-soaked snacks we love, but hidden in “healthier” foods that most people wouldn’t expect, such as bread, fruit, and dairy. The average American consumes up to thirty-one pounds of sugar each year, even though a high-sugar diet can be detrimental to nearly all areas of health and beauty. The side effects aren’t just weight gain—they’re premature aging and increased risk of diabetes, atherosclerosis, heart disease, and even cataracts. In The Sugar Detox: Lose Weight, Feel Great, and Look Years Younger by nutritionist Brooke Alpert and dermatologist Dr. Patricia Farris, readers are given everything they need to know to begin a healthier lifestyle through an easy, low-sugar diet. The Sugar Detox contains a comprehensive, one-month plan to wean readers of their sugar cravings. The plan starts with the three-day Sugar Fix—three days with no sugar, no exceptions. It’s accompanied by the three-day Skin Fix, a pampering regimen of soothing skin treatments such as sea salt baths and black tea masks to counteract sugar-related skin damage. Once the initial cleanse has been completed, The Sugar Detox provides a four-week schedule of menu plans and fifty recipes, arming readers with information on which foods to eat, which foods to avoid, and how it all affects their health and appearance.

Let's face it. The low carb/high fat approach is still not politically correct. Eliminating added sugar is getting lots of support in the media these days from films like Fed Up, and books like Fat Chance by Dr. Robert Lustig.
The truth is, I didn't just eliminate sugar in order to lose more than 65 pounds, and keep it off (with a 6 month period of re-gain which I will describe on today's show) for six years and counting. I also completely eliminated grains, I ate more fat, and most shocking of all, I occaisionally practiced intermittent fasting. I was truly afraid to tell anyone how I had lost all my weight, let alone write publicly about it.
Then, I saw Dr. David Perlmutter on the Dr. Oz Show. He was talking about his book, Grain Brain. I bought the book, read it, and followed Dr. Perlmutter's dietary approach in order to get back to my happy weight. The most important conviction I gained from Grain Brain was that I never ever had to eat grains again. Finally, I had the courage to write my story, and share my own approach to sugar and grain free living. If you've decided to let grains go for good, I hope you'll listen today, and read Grain Brain, by Dr. David Perlmutter

Do you have a sweet tooth but feel guilty every time you reach for something sweet? Sugar comes in many tasty forms but our bodies can react adversly towards eating too much of any one of them. Eating too much can put us at risk for diabetes. Diabetes is a disease in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body to control the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood. Without insulin, glucose builds up in your blood instead of being used for energy. Learn more about sugar’s effect on our health in this month’s tele lunch-and-learn workshop.
