If 2014 was the year of the LGBT athlete on Outsports, 2015 is becoming the year of the Christian college. Just this past week two stories have developed that again put the policies and practices of religious institutions in the spotlight. Hours after dismissing a priest for supporting the NOH8 campaign, Seton Hall signed openly gay basketball player Derrick Gordon, leaving many to wonder about double standards and how Gordon will be treated by students, faculty and administrators at the devout Christian college.
While the policy has been around for at least a year, the student-athlete handbook at LeTourneau University has come under the spotlight. The handbook bans gay athletes from dating, and it prohibits any athlete from publicly supporting same-sex marriage.
All the while, these colleges are allowed to reap the benefits and rewards of membership in the NCAA, which claims to support diversity and inclusion.
For many sports fans, sports provide a gateway to easing our minds off of real life problems. Your relationship may be on the rocks, rent money is due, or you just need a break from the rigors of the real world. Having the ability to go to a sporting event and drink some beer with your buddies is so common in today’s society, that there are often fans that take their love of the game a little too far. Sure, it’s cool to dress up in black and grey at Oakland Raiders’ games, but outside of the arena you still look like a fool.
Whether our hatred for certain athletes come from jealousy or not, there is always that one athlete fans cannot stand. It may not even be that they are jealous of their massive contracts, but rather that you envy their lifestyle and the people they associate themselves with. While I certainly do not hate New England Patriots’ Tight End Rob Gronkowski, I definitely hate the fact he gets to party it up with stars and drink for free everywhere.
Other fans’ hatred of athlete comes as a result of allegations of cheating or admissions of guilt. Betraying the fan base is a big no-no in professional sports, and it seems that its all too common place now a days. Most fans can understand the fact that athletes have families and they do their best to provide for them. However, leaving a city in favor of a slightly bigger contract is a quick way to betray the city that you once called home.
The following is a list of the most hated athletes in sports. Amongst the list of athletes you will find cheaters, liars, and plenty of arrogance to go around.
