The Cancerous Stories We Sometimes Live By (Part 2)

    in Psychology

How can we understand the stories that motivate the murderous behavior of Islamic groups such as Isis, Al Queda, and Boko Haram? In my last podcast I suggested that such organizations have always been a part of the human condition and associated with many religions and nationalistic movements. Today I shall take another trip down memory lane and discuss the cancers that arose within Christianity and why Islam is now such fertile ground for the modern versions of these horrors. I will spend time discussing the rise of Hitler and the Nazis which also might cast light on why deadly cancerous ideas get organized and gain traction among large groups of people. Finally, I will begin to discuss some notions as to the factors that prevent these cancers from developing.

The Cancerous Stories We Sometimes Live By (part 1)

    in Psychology

Like many others I am horrified by the lastest activities of those justifying the mass murder of innocents in the name of Islamic Jihad. As a psychologist I feel compelled to try and explain such behaviors believing that only understanding can lead to preventing both the atrocities themselves and fear driven, irrational responses to the perpetrators. I will employ the medical metaphor of cancer to structure my own story to explain the current wave of violence across the middle east and now "metasticizing" into Europe, the United States and other parts of the world. The philosopher Daniel Dennett suggests that many ideas and other products of human imagination refered to as "memes" can be compared to their biological counterparts, the genes. Genes that add to human adaptibility tend to spread in the population while those that fail to add to human health and adaptive success die off and disappear. Similarly ideas and inventions (Psychoanalysis and cell phones for example) expand rapidly to the degree that people who come in contact with them find them helpful in their adaptive struggles in life. Genes can become damaged and create cancers that spread and if not contained can destroy the lives of those so suffering. So too can ideas, stories and other inventions lead to the destruction of lives, whole societies, and I believe to civilization and our species itself. Just as cancer can be found all over the planet and in every historical epoch so to can cancerous stories be found. The Crusades, Nazism, malignant Communism, and hundreds of other political, religious and nationalistic movements prove that Islamic Jihad is not unique and is not merely a product of the Muslim faith but is to be understood as innate to human social functioning as is cancer to our biological existence.

Introduction to the Courage to Heal Series

    in Self Help

It's time to help other survivors who are suffering find "The Courage to Heal" and Faith Reagan, host of the Surviving With Faith Radio Show, will be doing just that as she presents this multi-show series for survivors near and far!

You may be asking yourself what exactly this is about.  "The Courage to Heal:  A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse," authored by Ellen Bass and Laura Davis is an empowering guide for survivors as they work through their healing journeys.  Written with compassion and warmth, the reader is gently guided through the steps of healing, beginning with "taking stock" and "recognizing the damage" and then continuing on to the "healing process."

It is during this process that the reader/survivor learns to understand that the abuse was not their fault and learns to trust oneself.  You learn that grieving and mourning is an integral part of the journey as you find ways to unleash the emotions, which have been smothered by the voicelessness of your inner child, and how to move on.

As your journey moves forward, you will learn about "changing patterns" and becoming aware of behaviors, which you want to change, and how and why these behaviors were developed.  With change often come obstacles and challenges, facing fear and striking down the negative self-talk that holds you back.  You will learn how to celebrate the achievement of your goals - no matter how small or how grand and claim the life you want to be living, the life that you deserve to be living!

"The Courage to Heal" is for women and men survivors of child sexual abuse as well as advocates, counselors, coaches, supporters, partners, family, and friends of survivors.

The Courage to Heal Series: Taking Stock Part II

    in Self Help

Join us as host Faith Reagan continues with the third show in "The Courage to Heal Series," which is based on the book "The Courage to Heal:  A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse," authored by Ellen Bass and Laura Davis.

As the last show ended, Faith was discussing the process of taking stock and explaining the "building blocks of safety" including how to create ground rules, create boundaries (or as Laura Davis put it "build a container"), find a safe spot, establish your privacy, and establish a protective pattern and/or routine.  Faith will pick up where she left off in establishing a protective pattern and then continue with building your support system by making lists and asking yourself the right questions to know who directly supports you in your healing.  After answering these questions, things to think about are:  Were there any surprises in looking at all the people in my life and, if so, what were they?  Can I imagine someone supporting me and why or why not?  What's standing between me and a better support system?

Tune in to learn how to progress on your healing journey.  May peace be with you!
