Ted Chabasinski - The Barbarity of Electric Shock Treatments on Children

    in Politics Progressive

Ted Chabasinski  is an attorney and human rights activist in Berkeley, California.  In 1944, as a 6-year-old boy so intellectually gifted he jumped from first grade to third he was taken from his home in the Bronx to New York’s Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced “schizophrenic”, because his mother had been labelled “schizophrenic”. There he began a series of 20 electro-convulsive shock treatments. The boy, Ted Chabasinski, was one of hundreds of children used in ECT experiments. Tests since condemned as barbaric. He remained an inmate in a state psychiatric hospital until the age of seventeen. Chabasinski survived and became active in the civil rights movement and ultimately an attorney.

Ted has organized an International Day of Protest  Against Shock Treatment, being held on May 16, 2015. There will be demonstrations in many countries and cities around the world.

The Sugar Show: Sugar and Our Sprouts with Ben Briggs

    in Family

Ben Briggs joins Shirley on the continuation of The Sugar Show  episodes to talk about sugar and its relationship and affect on children. The idea of sugar in children is particularly complex because sugar offeres some energy but not a lot else by way of nutrients and minerals essential for healthy growth and development for our little sprouts. If excessively consummed, the energy is not burned in the body and stored as fat.

Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Understanding the habits we form early on and our relationship with food, can better frame our youth's caloric imbalances- taking in lots of calories and expending few calories- and genetic, behavioral and environmental factors affected.

    Host: Shirley Gutkowski
    Guest: Ben Briggs

    Shirley's Sugar Show Episodes!

    in Family

Welcome to Cross Link Radio's The Sugar Show episodes. Last season we broke the week down into Business, Inflammation, Wellness, Biofilm, and Leisure. This season we only have one category, Sugar! Every Wednesday we’ll explore sugars from the plant to the toilet. Shirley has found experts in all kinds of sugars, some you’ve heard of and some you haven’t. Tune in Wednesdays as we explore if sugar is really all bad.

I'll be talking to physicians, researchers, and industry people about specific sugars. Dr. John Peldyak will co-host on occasion with his vast knowledge of behind the sugar knowledge illuminating points that we'd never think about, sugar for erasing wrinkles? Sugar as insecticide? We're not kidding.

We think you'll look forward to the insights uncovered and you'll find that life can still be oh so sweet.
