Frugivore Magazine wrote an article, "Is the Black Church causing obesity by overeating?", raising the concern of obesity amongst African Americans. In 2013, a study conducted by Northwestern University observed 2,433 particpants over an 18-year time period. Out of the particpants, 41% were African Americans who attending one religious event weekly was at risk to become obese.
Dr. Thomas A. Laveist, Director of the Hopkins Center for Health Disparities Solutions, states that,
"Black church culture is out of alignment with some biblical teachings, particularly when it comes to how we eat. Church culture has got us drinking Kool-Aid, eating white bread, fried chicken, large servings of macaroni and cheese and collard greens drenched with salty hog maws (foods that are high in sugar, salt, calories, and carbohydrates that trigger health problems). We’re eating this in the church basement at dinner and at church conventions! Meanwhile, the Bible teaches against gluttony."
Is it time for the Black Church Culture to regain it's health? Join TruthTalk with special guest Zhivi Williams, health & wellness coach and advocate of Leading by Example. Topic of discussion will be on regainig focus on health through clean eating, exercise, and weight maintenance.

Tonight's special guest is Mike Tikkanen from Minnesota, Founder of KARA (Kids at Risk Action) at InvisibleChildren.org. Kids At Risk Action is partnering with Minnesota Public Television to demonstrate why it is in our community's interest to stop the repeated failures throughout our child protection system and make children healthy. Brandon Stahl’s reporting on the tortured death of four year old Eric Dean after 14 ignored reports of child abuse by mandated reporters caused Governor Dayton to remark on the colossal failure of child protection and order a review of Minnesota’s child welfare system. Mike hopes changes will be made to the reporting, recording, and accountability as to how counties manage reports of child abuse and some effort will be made to change the dismal fact that Minnesota screens out 70% of child abuse calls and ranks 47th among the states in providing resources to children in child protection. 29% of children are sent back to the abusive conditions they were rescued from, and the average child is placed in four different foster homes. Mike asks, "Please support KARA’s effort to create the change to reach the tipping point to save children from the toxic homes and dysfunctional lives that hurt our schools, make our streets unsafe, and fill our prisons." Mike is passionate about improving the treatment of abused and neglected children and has formed his non-profit, Kid’s At Risk Action (KARA), to bring public awareness to children’s rights and form action groups to improve public policy towards at-risk children. Tonight's special guest is John Seryak from Ohio, Board Member of SESAME (Stop Educator Sexual Abuse, Misconduct & Exploitation), the leading national voice for the prevention of sexual exploitation, abuse, and harassment of students by teachers and other school staff. Ending the practice of “passing the trash,” a phenomenon where educators investigated for abuse are able to resign and get a new job at a new school, is SESAME’s top priority for ending abuse in schools. The organization works toward the following goals: increasing public awareness of educator sexual abuse by breaking the silence in a strong and united voice, fostering recovery of survivors through mutual support and access to information, and encouraging survivors of educator sexual abuse to report their offenders to local law enforcement officials and state education department credentialing offices. SESAME also insists on implementation of and adherence to child-centered educator sexual abuse policies, regulations and laws and directs attention to the maintenance of proper boundaries between school staff and students by promoting annual training, the adoption of professional standards and codes of ethics. After 35 years as a teacher John became interested in child abuse and neglect issues from the classroom teacher's perspective. Building on his academic background, he developed the Dear Teacher Project, whose mission statement embraced the need to educate classroom teachers as to the extent, degree and effects of child abuse and neglect on students in the classroom. This work culminated in the publication of Dear Teacher If You Only Knew!

Wearing a Blue Ribbon is the symbol of Child Abuse Awareness! Millions of abuse victims (men and women) hide the story of their experience well into adulthood. A huge number continue to suffer from pain, anger, fear, shame and embarrassment for decades. Most will agree their traumas have resulted in an inability to trust, make good decisions and have healthy relationships. But giving up the secret is often how recovery begins, one survivor talking to another. Join Bill Murray and his co-hosts, panelists and guests, many of them abuse survivors, others supporters and friends, for an informed discussion of the many important issues that surround child abuse. Anonymous calls and chat room participation are encouraged. ~~ Please see our web site at: www.NAASCA.org
