Elizabeth Berrien, Published Author, Speaker, Co-founder of The Respite: A Centre for Grief & Hope, Founder of Soul Widows
Elizabeth Berrien is a published author who co-founded the non-profit The Respite: A Centre for Grief & Hope and also founded the organization Soul Widows, for young widows age 60 and under. Her personal journey through grief began at the age of 27 when she lost her son to stillbirth in 2008, followed by the death of her late husband, a Special Forces soldier, in 2009. These two consecutive losses catalyzed her to create a space for other women suffering heartache and upheaval. As she sought community and healing, she began Soul Widows in 2010, only seven months after the death of her husband. She currently facilitates monthly Soul Widows support groups and retreats for other women who have lost their spouse or partner. In 2011, she met two incredible women with their own stories of loss, and together they founded The Respite: A Centre for Grief & Hope, which provides a variety of integrative services for people coping with all types of loss. She continues to inspire and provide hope to others grieving by sharing her story and through her writing.
Her most recent projects include the publishing of her book, "Creative Grieving: A Hip Chick's Path from Loss to Hope" (available July 2013) as well as being a co-author in the book "In the Spirit of Abundance" (Hayhouse, available summer 2013.)
Losing a child is traumatic, tragic and earth shattering. What happens when you become pregnant again? My guests grappling this topic will be Heidi Faith of Stillbirthday.com and Franchesca Cox author of Celebrating Pregnancy Again, she started an online magazine for contributors to write pieces about their journeys. It's called Still Standing Magazine.
Lorraine Ash, MA, is the author of Life Touches Life: A Mother’s Story of Stillbirth and Healing (NewSage Press, 2004) and Self and Soul: On Creating a Meaningful Life (Cape House Books, 2012). Both are spiritual memoirs, an old but evolving genre she believes in as a catalyst for personal healing and transformation and social change.
“We each were born as a character into a large family and cultural story,” she said, “and not always in the roles we would have chosen for ourselves. Then fate takes us in unexpected directions. Writing spiritual memoir is a way to weave our outer and inner lives to create meaning and trace and direct our evolving identities over time, including that timeless core in each of us called the soul.”
What does all that have to do with social change? Nothing helps the human race see and understand itself more than such honest witnessing in every corner of the human experience. There is no taboo territory in autobiographical writing, which the author William Dean Howells once c
Join The Healing Place and Nikhol Jackson with guest Marcia McGinnis,Co-Founder and President of SHARE Atlanta: Pregnancy and Newborn Loss Grief Support Group.
Marcia survived the loss of three babies: Catherine and Elizabeth due to miscarriage and Seth at full term due to a birth defect. From this experience, she became aware of the need for education programs to help parents to address their grief and acquire coping skills.
In 1984, Marcia helped found SHARE Atlanta (SA) to provide grief support for families who experience a pregnancy (ectopic, miscarriage, and stillbirth) or newborn loss. Tune in to hear Mrs Mc Ginnis share her story and how to deal with the loss of a newborn or infant.
