Startup Junkies: Is this an addiction? Is our topic on The Core Business Show with Tim Jacquet. Thinking about the term “startup junkie” and I can’t quite figure it out. “Junkie,” indicates some kind of addiction but, unlike heroin or meth, “startups” aren’t a clearly defined drug that you buy on the corner. In fact, if you really think about it, startups aren’t really a definable thing at all but more like a messy, unpredictable process. Are these people really addicted to uncertain processes and outcomes, or is it something else? I’m willing to bet that the vast majority of people who call themselves startup junkies are actually addicted to something other than the difficult task of starting and growing a profitable business. 5 Startup Mistakes in Business to Avoid by Tim Jacquet. For many people, the upcoming fall season heralds many other changes as well: Kids headed back to school, folks starting a new job, and for many, it is time to finally start that new business. Steve-Strauss–in-article-Medium.pngThat makes sense of course. A lot of people contemplating a startup choose not to begin their new businesses in the summer, knowing that people are usually distracted and that getting their attention – critical for a new business – is not easy. So, instead of competing with warm weather, vacations, and days off, these savvy entrepreneurs know that waiting until the fall is almost always the way to go. #TimJacquet

This week's women headliners span the globe and news! From Davos, the host to the World Economic Forum (WEF), an annual meeting of global political and business elites and the home of one of Switzerland's biggest ski resorts, women made headlines for their participation in many ways. From the lack of women participants, to the women who did attend and made headlines: from Angela Merkel to Christine Lagarde to Emma Watson reviewing her #HeforShe non-profit's newest campaign "IMPACT 10X10X10". Then in the U.S. the biggest headliner this past week was the President' Obama's 2015 State of the Union address and the woman headliner, Senator Joni Ernst as the Republican speech in response. And for women in business, tech startup giant Joanna Widenemuller, CEO of 1Page and her feature as the $100MM woman in tech. Tune in every week to hear women in the headliners and those making their own news!
All too often people confuse their responsibility for debts incurred by one spouse of the other. Responsibility for debts owed are not only premised on the State in which you reside, but, also on whether the debt was incurred before, during or even after the termination of a marriage. Hence, if your business is not protected, it too can be the subject of debt collection between the spouses, or even a source of debt that can affect the personal assets of the family. In this show, Bill and Rick put a defining perspective on when, how, and under what conditions, incurred debts may be jointly "owned".
On today's show, we will hear from Tim Tolan of The Tolan Group on trends in talent management, Kathy Breitenbucher of The Pedestal Group and the Midwest Family Business Center on four generations in the workforce and social media, and Russ Blain of the Newport Board group on trends in board management.
The full impact of the Affordable Care Act (aka "Obamacare") will be fully felt in 2015, especially by small to mid-sized business owners.
Many business owners were misinformed or lacked adequate guidance when they began to plan their employee benefits plans and are feeling a serious financial pinch as a result.
So, what ARE business owners doing with regard to the ACA? Are they electing to send their employees to the exchanges for subsidies? Are they continuing to provide health insurance benefits as they did before? If they are providing health insurance, how have their premiums increased?
Never before has any piece of legislation had the potential to adversely effect American business owners. Rick Liuag, an author, veteran insurance agent, and entrepreneur has spent the last several years analyzing the ACA and its' effects on families, individuals, and small business owners.
Rick Liuag, author of "How to Build Your Own Online Insurance Agency." and "You're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat," is president of Rick Liuag Insurance Agency. He has worked with dozens of small business owners, clubs and organizations, as well as self employed professionals to help them understand and navigate the requirements of Obamacare.
