SORT BY Relevancy
The latest television show added to the fray of reality show portrayals of black life in America, is a show called Sorority Sisters. It depicts women who are members of the Divine 9 black Greek letter sororities. Saying the show displays them in a less than favorable light is an understatement. There have been many protests and a huge petition to stop the show yet VH1 has still gone forward with its airing. The show brings up a lot of questions about the way black people and black women in particular have been portrayed in media historically and raises a lot of questions about how corporate media is affecting the image of black women in society. Guest Michelle Gordon Jackson, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the former daughter-in-law of the former Atlanta Mayor, Maynard H. Jackson will be featured. Wednesday, October 1, 3 pm ET The Halli Casser-Jayne Show takes an in-depth look at the careers of three women who changed the trajectory of television news: Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric and Christiane Amanpour the subject of journalist Sheila Weller’s fascinating new book THE NEWS SORORITY, DIANE SAWYER, KATIE COURIC, CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR – AND THE (ONGOING, IMPERFECT, COMPLICATED) TRIUMPH OF WOMEN IN TV NEWS, Weller, the guest for the hour.
Journalist Sheila Weller forged her career with her scintillating true life tales drawn directly from the news. She is the author of seven books - three of which are New York Times bestsellers - including GIRLS LIKE US: CAROLE KING, JONI MITCHELL, CARLY SIMON – AND THE JOURNEY OF A GENERATION, the book that made headlines presenting an insightful and detailed portrayal of music's three most trailblazing and beloved singer-songwriters borne in the stultifying 1950s, coming of age in the turbulent Sixties -- three women who brilliantly rode the second-wave of feminism.
Weller has covered domestic abuse, upscale marriages, wife killing, and secret rapes in storybook communities, as well as her own family's halcyon life and the tragic demise of the premiere Hollywood nightclub they owned in her acclaimed memoir DANCING AT CIRO’S. A Contributing Editor at Glamour, a writer for Vanity Fair, the New York Times Book Review Weller she is respected among her peers for her comprehensive, evocative investigative writing about all aspects of women's lives and issues.
Her latest book THE NEWS SORORITY, DIANE SAWYER, KATIE COURIC, CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR – AND THE ONGOING, IMPERFECT, COMPLICATED TRIUMPH OF WOMEN IN TV NEWS does not disappoint.

Sororities take issue with reality TV and advertisers take notice:
Considering other reality TV shows that portray Black women in a negative light what was different about Sorority Sisters’?
Should reality TV be seen as entertainment only or are there values and images that are worthy of preserving and protecting?
