SORT BY Relevancy
There was a time when whites did not want black nurses to attend to them, even though black women had been feeding them and nursing them back to health during slavery. But a nurse was a professional position, sometimes more prominent in the hospital than the doctor in saving a patient's life. Black women who broke the barriers in the field of nursing recently celebrated the 50 year anniversary of the 1965 graduating class of Provident School ofNursing. This past weekend October 16, they celebrated the Founder of a nursing sorority that continues to provide scholarships for African American women in the field of nursing. Today Kai Eta Phi sorority member Toni Parks Oats discusses the challenges in the field of nursing and the importance of encouraging our girls excel in math and science, critical skills they'll need ins health care industry.
The latest television show added to the fray of reality show portrayals of black life in America, is a show called Sorority Sisters. It depicts women who are members of the Divine 9 black Greek letter sororities. Saying the show displays them in a less than favorable light is an understatement. There have been many protests and a huge petition to stop the show yet VH1 has still gone forward with its airing. The show brings up a lot of questions about the way black people and black women in particular have been portrayed in media historically and raises a lot of questions about how corporate media is affecting the image of black women in society. Guest Michelle Gordon Jackson, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the former daughter-in-law of the former Atlanta Mayor, Maynard H. Jackson will be featured.
