Theresa Maher's’s life theme has been that of change and a continuous evolution. Through this profound way of life, she was exposed to the experience of living in every situation imaginable from homelessness and poverty in childhood to wealth for a period of time, and just about else everything in between.
Variety has also penetrated the roles Terri has experienced in life. She has walked the path of pain, loneliness and depression, but also enlightenment and that of an inner, peaceful spirit. Her roles in life have covered a broad spectrum ranging from wife and mother to that of a struggling single empty nester. She has been a performer, writer, subordinate and leader. As a nurse she felt privileged to love people through their last breaths, and as a teacher, help adults raise self-esteem through finding their fullest potential. Pursuing the bulk of her higher education later in life, she is presently completing a second master’s degree in preparation for licensure to practice psychotherapy. In the meantime, she volunteers educating the community about Alzheimer’s disease, running support groups and volunteering in community organizations with the intent to help work towards alleviating hunger.
Spiritually, Terri claims no religious affiliations, but strongly embraces the teachings of Christ and Buddha. She is a sensitive, but chooses not to pursue an external metaphysical focus except for encouraging people to find and exist through their own spirituality.

Buddha says, Compassion is that which makes the heart of the good move at the pain of others. It crushes and destroys the pain of others; thus, it is called compassion. It is called compassion because it shelters and embraces the distressed. Sympathy is the heightened awareness of another’s plight such as I’m sorry for your loss. Empathy is the ability to step into the shoes of another person, attempting to understand their feelings and perspectives. Compassion goes a step further, where you first feel empathy and then a desire to help alleviate the suffering of another. Compassion is used to express the same feeling as empathy, but you have a desire to take action. Over the last decade, neuroscientists have identified an empathy circuit in our brains which, if damaged, can curtail our ability to understand what other people are feeling. Evolutionary biologists have shown that humans are social animals who have naturally evolved to care for each other, like our primate cousins. Psychologists feel that we are primed for empathy by strong attachment relationships in the first two years of life. Empathy is a topic for scientists, business leaders, educaters, and political activists. According to research, empathy is a habit we should cultivate to improve the quality of our own lives. The buzz stems from a revolutionary shift in the science of how we understand human nature. The old view that we are essentially self-interested creatures is being nudged firmly to the side by evidence that we are also wired for empathy, social cooperation, and mutual aid. Join me and Life Coach Jenn A. Nocera as we discuss this topic. After the show, check out After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live.
Being a hippie is not a matter of dress, behavior, economic status, or social milieu. It is a philosophical approach to life that emphasizes freedom, peace, love and a respect for others and the earth. The way of the hippie never died. There have always been hippies from the first time society laid down rules, to Jesus, to Henry David Thoreau, to John Lennon, to you. There’s a little hippy in all of us. It’s just been repressed by our socialization process. We need to find it and cultivate our hippie within. Only then can we reach our true potential.

Did you know that heart disease is largely self-inflicted? It is, according to Robert J. Recobs, M.S., R.Ph., author, How to Prevent or Survive Heart Disease: Easy-To-Apply Health Defense Strategies to Protect You and Your Family. He writes, "Nearly 50% of the US adult population has two or more risk factors which lead to heart disease. What are your chances of having heart disease? One in three! … You don't get it by chance. ... UNLESS you get involved and do your part to reduce / remove lifestyle risk factors, the benefits of medicine and surgery are limited." Searching for the fountain of youth? Look inside, says Rev. Julie Renee, author, Beautiful from the Inside Out: 61 Days to Transform You into a More Youthful, Beautiful Self. She writes, "Having been ill for many years, I felt that my divine destiny was not to be in pain and suffering for a prolonged period. So, very much like Buddha, I took to my garden for a new transformational life and path. What I learned through the blissful hours of meditation and prayer in my garden was the secret of regeneration for my fragile body… how the systems of the body work and how to bring youth, the fountain of youth, back into my body." In 1999 Genpo created what he named the Big Mind Process, also known as Big Mind/Big Heart, which teaches not only the teaching of Zen but also spiritual practices within Eastern and Western traditions. It has helped thousands of people from all walks of life have a genuine and sustainable awakening with little or no prior consciousness study, including persons of all faiths and religious backgrounds as well as non-believers. It is being used in the practice of psychotherapy, law, medicine, mediation, the arts, physical therapy, chaplaincy, yoga, business, athletics, social work, family therapy, education and spiritual practices with prison inmates, hospital patients and the dying. Roshi continues to train people to bring this teaching out into the world, and remains deeply committed to its ongoing evolution.
Genpo will explain how the essence of Zen, is waking up to our essential nature free from all dogma, suddenly and immediately. He'll talk about different forms such as as chanting, devotional practices, and koan study, which he still uses as beautiful expressions of the teachings; only not as the sole means for waking up or actualizing and living with profound wisdom and compassion, the cornerstone of Buddha Dharma taught by the great Sixth Patriarch, the founder of Zen as we know it today.
We will also be discussing his latest book "The Fool Who Thought He Was God" , a compelling read which is jammed packed with insights and wisdom in an entertaining fiction story.
