Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Eddie Sherman & Peggy Raley!

    in Music

A really good friend turned me onto True Blue Jazz this year - and I'm eternally grateful!  This absolutely fantastic Jazz series is in its third year - an alternative event source to the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival.  Eddie Sherman - with a major career and sold-out shows in his own background - met with Peggy Raley, a respected vocalist who relished Jazz.  Together, they decided that their popular beach community needed to focus on "Straight Ahead" Jazz.  The Great American Standards from 1900 to the present.  They were looking for interpretation and innovation.  They were tired of only ONE kind of Jazz being represented with the RBJF.  So, they put their heads together and came up with a beautiful solution :)

Once again this year, True Blue Jazz is giving you a delicious taste of The Real Deal - including Eddie and Peggy in performance.  Also involved: The Fred Hughes Trio (Fred returns to "Hybrid Jazz" on 10/27!) - and that trio includes Amy Shook on bass.  Amy is wrapping up her electric stint with Diva Jazz as part of the important foreground of "Tappin' Thru Life" with Maurice Hines!  This trio is making a repeat performance in the True Blue Jazz series - and they SMOKE the Clear Space Theatre!  Also set to star: young Geoff Galante (GRACIOUS, wait until you get a load of this one on trumpet!) The Jackie Browne Jazz Nonet has a terrific reputation - Eddie can't say enough about Jackie - so this night is gonna sizzle, too!  And Diane Schuur is booked for a very special night - the birthday of yours truly on 10/16!  Woo HOO!

There's another reason why this lovely endeavor needs our support: what they do for the children in Sussex County, Delaware.  True Blue's "Youth Jazz Educational Initiative" is enough to make you cry - it's that generous!  Join us on 10/12 and get ready to be excited!

Dr.George Coletti-- Red Spoke Best Seller Speaks!

    in Books

By Tom Livsey, OurTown National News Editor,

Just when you thought you knew everything about ,'The War Between The States', Dr. George Coletti spins a yard, like you will not imagine...'Red Spoke' examined!

    Book Storyline:

Just before the outbreak of the War Between the States, Buck Jernigan, his wife Betty Gail, their twins, Norman and Mia and their two free Negroes, Isaac and Sally, live happily in the small hamlet of Stone Mountain, Georgia.

Unknown to Betty Gail, Buck and Isaac become deeply committed to and submerged in the Underground Railroad. Buck and Isaac, as stealth abolitionists, free nearly fifty local slaves.

The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by19th-century enslaved people of African descent in the United States in efforts to escape to free states and Canada. This was accomplished, in part, with the aid of abolitionists and allies who were sympathetic to their cause.

Buck and his family strive to survive the ravages of war as it comes to their very doorstep—in the guise of General William Tecumseh Sherman himself. This tale of war and the relationships that bind us will bring you to tears and laughter—and to the very edge of your seat with the tension of the battles they must fight.

The truth about what’s happening in our schools.

    in Motivation

Counselor Mandy Eppley speaks with school social worker Barry Sherman about his story and the impact his mother’s sudden death when he was 18 years old had on the course of his life. Barry also gives a first-hand account of the inequity that is in many of the schools throughout our country. He is experiencing this at the school he currently works in, located in Charlotte, NC, as it has moved backward and is now segregated. The biggest factor that separates the children in his school from other schools is their socio economic status with the majority living in poverty. Due to this, the majority of children are struggling with multiple risk factors that they bring to school with them each day. Thus, instead of being able to teach and create an optimal learning environment, they need to spend time addressing these risk factors. He is using his grief and outrage about this situation to fuel the actions he is taking to address and change this on a systemic level. One of the messages he wants to get out is that the best learning environment can be created when diversity, especially in economic levels, is present in our schools.??

Barry Sherman - MSW, LCSW, is a school social worker with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Until 2011 he served for nearly 20 years as the Assistant Director of The Institute for Life-leadership & Coaching. He also continues his work with INTEGRA for KIDS, a leadership development program for children utilizing the creative arts. www.INTEGRAforKIDS.org.?? Barry is also taking a leadership role in changing what is happening in our schools. To find out more about what actions are being taken by the OneMECK Coalition to institute change in the Charlotte/Mecklenburg system please visit www.onemeck.org. This coalition could also serve as a model for other cities and school systems.
