Sheila Raye Charles joins Choc'Let to discuss "Behind the Shades" CD|Book

    in Music

Sheila Raye Charles creates her own distinct sound while delivering her intensely inspiring message of hope and love.  As a talented singer/songwriter, she has found her voice in acoustic jazz and R & B with lyrics that deliver the personal journey of her own life and her relationship with her legendary father, Ray Charles. At age 19, with great courage, she defied her father’s wishes and pursued music.  Demonstrating her commitment and her talent, her father actually brought her and her band into his studio and personally produced several songs.  Through a series of life changing events, her music career waned as she gathered a lifetime of experiences which, today, give great meaning and countenance to her music.

Today, Charles is called upon to provide skin tingling renditions of her father’s best known songs from America the Beautiful to Hit The Road Jack to Georgia from jazz festivals to embassy parties to clubs and places of worship.  As an entertaining and engaging vocalist, Charles is able to inspire her audiences with stories of her life challenges of drug addiction and recovery, of her spiritual journey and personal growth while at the same time delivering meaty, life giving music.  With the publication of her life story, Behind the Shades, Charles provides insight into her life and her path to God.

    SHEILA RAYE CHARLES +EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW +MON, SEPT 8, 2014 +7pm PST

    in Music

Sheila Raye Charles is an American singer-songwriter. She is the daughter of Ray Charles and Sandra Jean Betts. Her hometown is Cambridge, Ohio. Accomplished Daughter of legendary father, Ray Charles. Engaging inspiring Acoustic Jazz, Gospel and R&B vocalist/songwriter/minister.

Sheila is one of 12 children that Ray Charles fathered.  She was raised in Cambridge, Ohio, by her mother and didn’t meet her father until she was 14 years old.  Sheila suffered sexual abuse during her childhood and as a result spent many years struggling to find her identity.  At 13, Sheila moved to Los Angeles to live with her Uncle Jerry and hoped to establish a relationship with her father.

Within a year, Sheila moved back with her mom in Ohio and headed for trouble.  She ran away to North Carolina.  When Sheila was 16, she was in an auto accident that lodged her right eye into the back of her skull.  It took her many years to recover.

She returned to Los Angeles, this time with her mom and her brother Kevin.  She tried to launch a musical career and had the opportunity to record at Ray’s studio under his supervision.  Sheila travelled with the DeBarge family and found herself in Minneapolis to record at Paisley Park, Prince’s studio.  Unfortunately, Sheila was unable to produce any music that the music industry found marketable so she began writing with various musicians and producers.  In 1990, Sheila was voted New Artist of the Year at the Minnesota Black Music Awards and continued to receive advice from her father on her musical career.
