Jesus the True Shepherd
10 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.
Jesus the Good Shepherd
7 Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who ever came before Me[a] are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Scripture Text : John 10:1-21
Key Verses : John 10:1-4
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
To him the porter openeth: and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.
10:1 Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit.
10:2 The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.
10:3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
10:4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice.
10:5 They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers."
10:6 Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.
10:7 So again Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.
10:8 All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them.
10:9 I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.
10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly."
Last episode, we discussed the problematic interpretation of the parable of the Olive Tree Vineyard, offered by Sidney Sperry and still deferred to in the Church Education System.
This parable is meant to show the will of the Lord, concerning what is called the redemption of Zion, and it presages "a great evil" befalling the Lord's vineyard and his servants.
However, in the parable, the Lord sends one of his servants, later identified as Joseph Smith, the prophet, to gather the strength of his house and lead them in a military march to redeem Zion.
This presents no problem, if the application of the parable was to be understood in the early days of the Church, because Joseph Smith did gather the saints and march to the land of Zion, although the results were far from what was expected, given the parable.
The only other possible application of the parable is that it has not yet been fulfilled, and, if that is the case, and Joseph Smith is to lead "the army of the Lord" to redeem Zion, then he must do so as a resurrected being.
Today, we begin the discussion of this startling, but inspiring, possibility, from the holy scriptures.
In this episode, we will continue the study of the so-called "Bozrah Deliverence," wherein the "breaker" leads the house of Israel out from the lesser sheepfold in Edom.
The non-LDS Christian community largely ignores this prophecy, or associates it with the second coming of Christ, described in Isaiah 63.
However, it fits well the ongoing saga of the restoration, which features Joseph Smith, as the breaker, and the redemption of Zion by him, as messiah ben Joseph, under the direction of Messiah ben David, the King of Zion, according to the Jewish Midrash.
