On today's show we will break down and debate Porter vs Brook. Unbeaten IBF Welterweight World Champion Shawn “Showtime” Porter, undefeated contender Kell Brook and seven other boxers who will compete on this Saturday’s stacked Golden Boy Promotions’ fight card at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.,
Kell Brook 32(22)-0 has been assuring his UK faithful that it’s “his time” for a while now. Our patience has inevitably thinned a little within this waiting period. Alongside evidence tipping toward proof, teasing the potential within that fans have been promised, were also levels of competition not befitting of a man demonstrating his arsenal of skills.
The injuries smudging the potential meeting with Alexander, setbacks both men were guilty of introducing, genuine or otherwise. What seemed like an overabundance of filler bouts and title eliminators, alongside questions surrounding Brooks love for the sport. All the above had us quietly musing to ourselves, (lest we were accused of insidious unpatriotic tendencies) if the said proclaimed “time” Kell continuously warned opponents of, would ever come around. Al Haymon in recent months has purchased a lot of air time on normal cable stations. Last week he had the premiere of Premiere Boxing Champions with Keith Thurman and Adrien Broner defeating Robert Guerrero and John Molina Jr respectively. This week will be the debut of boxing on Spike TV, live from Ontario, California. There will be a pair of welterweight fights as Andre Berto squares off against Josesito Lopez, and Shawn Porter will step into the ring against Roberto Garcia, both fights being 12 round, non-title bouts. Andre Berto (29-3 with 22 KOs) is trying to avoid losing his 4th fight in his last 6 bouts. He was on the fast track to stardom, making millions per fight at a young age, and had a record of 27-0. Then after having the best fight of 2011 against Victor Ortiz, everything seemed to crumble for the proud Haitian. Berto did bounce back against Jan Zaveck his next bout, but then lost in upsets to both Robert Guerrero and Jesus Soto Karass. After injuring his shoulder against Soto Karass, Berto didn’t step back into the ring for 14 months, which was last September. He had an easy fight and now is stepping the level of competition up in hopes of proving that his career isn’t over. On March 14 Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (26-0-1, 23 KOs) will compete in his first title defense as Unified WBO, WBA and IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion against former lineal light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal (29-2-1, 17 KOs) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Kovalev completed the first half of his preparations in Big Bear Lake, CA then moved to Miami, FL where he is finishing training camp with his trainer, John David Jackson.
The Unbeaten welterweight from Akron, Ohio Is stepping up in opposition taking on former World Champion Juilo "The Kid" Diaz. A decorated ameteur and 2008 U.S. Olympic team alternate, this 25 year old is ready to live up to his ring name "Showtime" already having captured the NABO & NABF welterweight titles he's looking to crown himself has one of the big names in the division. Porter is coming off of two named wins over Hector Munoz & Alfonso Gomez. We can't forget this kid has the backing of the powerful advisor Al Haymon and Sam Watkins along with son's Brandon and Marcus Watkins, Shawn has all the tools that one needs to be sucessful in this sport of boxing. so join us as we pick the brains of both men and ask the questions the fans want to hear and regular media afraid to ask.
And the winner of the Best Narrative Feature at the 2015 Garden State Film Festival is Windsor! The film follows 6 friends in their last year of high school as they prepare to leave their small, struggling Texas hometown, a place caught up in the wheels of giant agribusiness that seems to swallow up small farming towns. Maisie (Madelyn Deutch), whose father is about to be released from prison, decides she can’t leave town where she has been embraced since the dark day when her father nearly killed the man whose company foreclosed on their family farm resulting in long-term devastation on his family. The town patriarch, Gil Denton (perfectly played by character actor Barry Corbin), a no-nonsense, wealthy landowner dying from cancer, and he serves as a sounding board and sympathetic friend, while providing the kids a wistful link to a past they will never know. Set in current time, Windsor reminds us that small town values are worth saving, and that the mouse does indeed occasionally roar. Porter Farrell wrote, directed, and produced Windsor, his first film, along with Producer Adam Dietrich. Everything about the film is so well executed, that you’ll be hard pressed to believe this is Farrell’s first film. The movie also features Quinn Shephard, who received the Rising Star Award from the GSFF, an honor bestowed on an up-and-coming actor/actress with NJ roots. This film is a winner on multiple levels. After the interview, check After Hours at Jersey Coastal Live for more info.
In the much-anticipated main event of the evening, Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (27-0-1, 24 KOs)* and Jean Pascal (29-3-1, 17 KOs) pleased fans with an action-packed battle. Both fighters started by trading some good shots, but Kovalev started to throw some nasty combinations in the third round to take the wind out of the hostile crowd at the Centre Bell in Montreal. Just before the end of the third round, Kovalev knocked Pascal through the ropes but Pascal was saved by the bell.
There were so many storylines at play in Shawn Porter’s televised co-feature on Spike’s debut of Al Haymon’s “PBC” series. First, his opponent Erick Bone was as late a replacement as it gets, fighting in place for the overweight Roberto Garcia. Bone was scheduled to replace Garcia shortly after the news broke that Garcia would not try to lose the remaining pounds, reports that he was dealing with some sort of illness surfaced soon after. Then, reports about Karim Mayfield taking the late replacement duties surfaced and he was even present at the weigh-in, but the powers that be ultimately decided to go with Bone.
Andre Berto was able to stop Josesito Lopez in the 6th round of their “PBC” on Spike TV main event, live from the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California.
Berto stayed in a puncher’s stance early in the 1st round, but Lopez never took the bait. As both fighters circled each other to no prevail and certainly no effect, Lopez tried attacking the body in the closing moments.
Lopez was failing to set his punches up, and even when he tried it seemed not to work, so he only managed to land one shot at a time with any damage. Berto seemed tight and focused. It was as though Berto had some more motivation behind his performance, but it only made him vulnerable.
