December 5, 2007, 39 year old Patrick Smith was killed in a traffic accident in Mansfield, CT. This was not just a routine accident, the driver of a truck ran a stop light and plowed into Patrick's vehicle which was legally stopped at the light and then left the scene. Although some deadly traffic accidents are just that, an accident, with a driver who may have been at the wrong place at the wrong time, this accident is unusual as the driver was found to be in diabetic shock, his glucose level such that he didn't know what he was doing.
Michael Smith joins Shattered Lives Radio to help bring more awareness to, not only the public, but those who suffer with diabetes and the consequences of not taking control of the management of the disease. Joining Michael is Dr. Steven Edelman, author of "Taking Control of Your Diabetes" who has testified in court to the nuances of the disease and how it should be properly managed. As a diabetic, Dr. Edelman has not only clinical experience with the disease, but his own personal experiences in managing the disease properly.

Shattered Lives Radio host Donna R. Gore welcomes former NY Investigator and full time crime author, Denny Griffin to give listeners an update on the mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Sgt. Patrick Rust. Working with the Rust family, Griffin has worked diligently to uncover the clues that will resolve many of the unanswered questions.
Sgt. Patrick Rust was assigned to the 10thMountain Division headquartered at Fort Drum in Watertown, New York. In January 2007, he returned from deployment to Afghanistan. Following a 30 day leave he was back on post. The then 24-year-old Rust was a local boy and was familiar with Watertown and the surrounding area. He didn’t have a driver’s license or vehicle.
On Wednesday, March 14, 2007, Sgt. Rust moved most of his personal effects from the barracks on base to share an apartment with a fellow soldier at 156 Sterling Street, Apartment 4, in Watertown.
His skeletal remains were found six months later in a farmer’s field about five miles outside of Watertown. How he got to that location is unknown and his manner of death is undetermined.
If you have information, please call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department at 315 786-2676 or 786-2672.

Shattered Lives Radio Guest: Marcus "Strider" Dent:
"Our team can help pull communities together to let them see what we already have and what we still need. Then we go from there. And as Guardian Angels, we always do what we can, where we can to give back. When we get involved and involve the community, the crime rate is going to drop. Drugs, gangs, shootings. It's going to drop. And we're here to help communities make that happen."
In 2009, Strider was awarded the honor of Chapter Commander of the Year by Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels.
Dennis Griffin, best known for his mob-related true crime books, started his "after retirement" writing career writing mystery/thriller novels, one of the most popular, THE MORGUE. The novel is based on his work as an investigator looking into the operations of the medical examiners office. What he found was unbelievable and the fictionalized account tells the story of out of control coroner, perversion, cover up, and the politics behind it.
Shattered Lives Radio will be talking to Griffin about his "other life" as a New York state investigator before his 1995 retirement, specifically the medical examiner investigations as relayed in THE MORGUE.

All across the country law enforcement agencies are called during hostage situations, whether hostages being held for demands, political purposes, or more commonly relationship disputes. None of the described situations tend to end well. Either the perpetrators or the hostages are harmed, physically, mentally and emotionally.
But what about the ripple effect these situations have on not only the immediate victims and family, but the law enforcement and other personal, as well as those who put endless hours negotiating for a safe resolution?
Shattered Lives Radio welcomes hostage negotiators, Derek Gaunt and Sandy Hein.
They will talk about a real life case from Alexandria, Virginia, the set up of the circumstances, how terms were negotiated, and the outcome. Listeners will be taken inside to what goes on during a hostage situation and how if affects so many.
When a sudden tragedy occurs, like homicide, many surviving loved ones go on to do great things in memory of the one they lost. Jessalyn Dorsey is one such person.
Executive Director of Crime Victims Advocacy Council in Atlanta, GA, Jessalyn Dorsey lost her only child in 1999 to a senseless murder during a teen party. Not only was she unprepared for such a loss, as any mother would be, the event was life changing.
Often we see surviving victims who find the fortitude and courage to stand up and make changes in our system regarding crime victims. Jessalyn, through CVAC has taken the challenge and has given assistance to a growing population of victims who need help. Whether it be emotional support, or guidance through the justice system, CVAC provides much needed resources to community members facing a very uncertain and confusing time.
"CVAC is dedicated to preventing crime and assisting crime victims and their families and communities in Georgia through quality education, advocacy, counseling, and legislative initiatives," says their mission statement.

As a victim of crime anyone would want to know that the investigation was conducted professionally, thoroughly, and with the proper conclusions based on the evidence at the crime scene.
Unlike CSI and other popular television shows and movies, the reality of forensics and crime scene investigation is far removed.
Shattered Lives host, Donna R. Gore welcomes back one of her noted previous guests, Peter Valentin, to give listeners a crash course on evaluating a crime scene from a forensic standpoint.
