Helping Children with Anger and Preventing Sexual Abuse
Children are exposed to so many challenging life events that anger, violence, and abuse in many forms are affecting their everyday lives. How does a parent who has not had these issues, support their child who is experiencing them? By ignoring the problem, icing over the bigger picture, denying the truth that may be present or just by saying 'all is ok, no worries'. How does that really help the child who is reaching out and working to let you know what they are feeling?
My guest today is Julie Federico, a children's author who writes stories about anger problems and child abuse. She was a middle school counselor for 14 years and encountered a multitude of child abuse stories. Her books are Some Parts are NOT for Sharing and Anger is OKAY Violence is NOT. These books are also available in Spanish.
Please listen to your child, no matter what the story, no matter how far from your comfort level and no matter how difficult it is to admit. Julie will share her tips for the cases she worked with as a counselor.

About Mr. Budinsky.
My life has been challenging at best. I've dealt with addiction, shattered relationships, abandoned careers. I've been homeless, shot at, broken and disgusted. Only this last year have I "come out of hiding" so to speak. I have been ashamed of something and running my entire life. I never knew what it was. Now I know. I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and it has profoundly affected my life.
I was violated by three family members, a family friend, a neighbor, two local businessmen, a serial pedophile, a twenty-one year old women who enjoyed having a fifteen year old 'boy toy', and a psychiatrist. I began acting out and exhibiting signs when I was around ten, so this man was chosen to help me. He was a prominent member of our community as well as the church I was brought up in. He "took care" of all us young acolytes. Surely he could be trusted. He couldn’t.
I knew I was broken, troubled, and hopelessly addicted and entered recovery for that in 1976 at the age of twenty-six. My healing, spiritual journey began then. I worked diligently over the years in twelve step programs, therapy, inner child work, meditation, religion, ad infinitum. Suffice it to say that if there was anything available which I thought would be healing and enriching, I grabbed onto it. Yet I would periodically self destruct, typically when it appeared that I was doing my best.

Join Mr. Brett A. Scudder as he talks with Ms. Sharnae Lathan about her life, challenges and dealing with being raped, drugged and abused by her father for 18yrs.I was raped, beaten, drugged and brainwashed by my father for eighteen years. I repressed my memories unaware of my childhood trauma.This protected me from the traumatic experiences my mind did not want to recall. It did not protect my siblings nor my children from this same danger. My father used his intelligence to enslave my siblings and I, in his illusion. As he grew his million dollar empire built on lies, scams and deception, I sought therapy. As I worked thru my repressed memories, I unraveled the truth. I was raised by a pedophile and sociopath. I experienced an entire cocktail of depression. I feared for the safety of my children and I. Then I realized what was to be feared most, silence. I made my report on Thanksgiving Day 2012, and every day I grow stronger. Every day my voice becomes louder.My father had a drug and gambling addiction. He won the lottery and purchased a corner store off of Euclid road in East Cleveland. The first thing he did was install a custom made bullet proof front window. He gambled and sold drugs out of the store to suffice for his personal addictions. He provided legal and illegal advice to the community out of the back of the store in exchange for different needs. My father also sued large corporations to ensure he had disposable cash for unforeseen opportunities. My mother was in school and working often. When she was home it was sweet. She would hide a bag of sweethearts under the pillow and we would eat them at night. I remember she loved almond joys. Although I hated them, I ate it anyways just because, I loved her so.
