Anti-Bullying Seventeen Magazine Winner Singer Songwriter: Kathleen Elle

    in Youth

Kathleen Elle: New Jersey Teen,  "2013 Seventeen Magazine and Secret Deodorant's Mean Stinks Contest" for her anti-bullying original song “Don’t Let Them In,”  National Young Arts Foundation winner, featured in The Cyberbullying Research Foundation, and a guest speaker for anti-bullying advocacy at TedX.

“I wrote this song because I felt that most bullying prevention campaigns I witnessed at school were solely focused on getting the bullies to stop bullying. I thought there needed to be a message directly to victims to not let bullies get to them, because bullies are often empowered by the reaction they get from the victim.”

“I have found that music is the most powerful way to convey a message. Music has the incredible ability to move people. I know this to be true because I have received messages from around the world from victims who have told me they’ve listened to my song over and over to give them the strength to face their bullies. “

“I want my song to empower victims to wake up every day and have the courage to face anyone who makes fun of them for who they are. Victims should never change who they are for bullies. If they don’t let them in, bullies will never win.”

Episode 136: So you had some questions for us

    in Baseball

In the "We will probably not do an e-mail show ever again" edition, Jeffrey and Steve answer seventeen of your e-mails. There's a bullpen tryptich, a duo of Matt Harvey, and we officially end our hiatus from discussing Daniel Murphy's contract status. Oh, there's also a trilogy of Wilmer Flores questions, a prospect pronunciation guide, an anecdote about Jeffrey's college pro wrestling days, and of course, a query about an obsccure short-season player. The Mets also made a trade, so I guess we have to talk about that too. Sigh.

How Much More Time To The Beginning Of The End?

    in Current Events

The house of Israel acquired many possessions and multiplied exceedingly during the course of seventeen years, even through the worst of the seven-year famine. At this time, Joseph’s father was 147 years old and bedridden. He had fallen ill and lost most of his vision. Joseph was called into his father’s house and Israel pleaded with his son that he not be buried in Egypt. Rather, he requested to be carried to the land of Canaan to be buried with his forefathers. Joseph was sworn to do as his father asked of him. (Genesis 47:27-31)

Later, Joseph came to visit his father having with him his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. Israel declared that they would be heirs to the inheritance of the house of Israel, as if they were his own children, just as Reuben and Simeon were. Then Israel laid his left hand on the eldest Mannasseh’s head and his right hand on the youngest Ephraim’s head and blessed Joseph. However, Joseph was displeased that his father’s right hand was not on the head of his firstborn, so he switched his father’s hands. But Israel refused saying, “but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he.” A declaration he made just as Israel himself was to his firstborn brother Esau. To Joseph, he gave a portion more of Canaanite property than he had to his other sons; land that he fought for against the Amorites. (Genesis 48:1-22)

John Carver Show - Turned It Around

    in Self Help

This show will challenge you.  Throughout history and up to the present day thousands upon thousands of people have made it through some really hard times.  This is a sermon I shared recently that illustrates that life hands us all some very difficult times but there are some who push through them to bigger and better lives.

Victor Frankl in his book, Man’s Search for Meaning, found meaning in his suffering while in a Nazi concentration camp. Here are some ways you can find a meaning in your situation to move past it:
    What has it taught you?
    Has it made you stronger/kinder/wiser?
Even simply enduring a bad moment has meaning in making your happy moments better.
“A challenge only becomes an obstacle when you bow to it.” ? Ray A. Davis
Joseph was seventeen years old. He was a shepherd.
He did not participate in his brothers’ misconducts. In fact, he brought the reports of their mischief to his father, Jacob.
He was the favorite son of Jacob. Jacob loved him more than all his brothers. Jacob made a coat of many colors for him.
His brothers hated him for this reason and could not even talk with him well.

Joseph was rather naive to tell his dreams to his brothers about his future supremacy and his brothers’ submission to him. That intensified their hatred towards him.
So, when the opportunity came at Dothan, they planned to kill him. But Rueben tried to rescue him by persuading them not to kill him. His brothers sold him to the caravan of Ishmaelite going to Egypt.
His life was changed in a moment, from being the beloved son to the slave in an unknown land, Egypt.
Joseph was sold to Potiphar, the captain of Pharaoh’s guard.
Potiphar’s wife accused Joseph of attempted rape.

Human Trafficking - A Survivors Story - Jennifer Ward

    in Motivation

Roughly 4 years ago Jennifer discovered there was a thing called human trafficking. Hearing about slavery weighed heavily on her heart and she began praying to God. God spoke to her heart saying, “Your steps are ordered, You will be at the right place, at the right time, with the right people, and I will carry you in the palm of my hand” This became her daily prayer.

After having received Human Trafficking 101, Speakers Bureau, and Street Outreach training she began volunteering through Salvation Army’s CORRC. In Oct 2014 she was hired as a Volunteer Coordinator. In Jan 2015 the Ohio task force rescued 18 Massage Parlor survivors. As Volunteer Coordinator she was able to care for these women.

Jennifer is still currently volunteering and has developed many friendships with survivors. After opening up one day she came to the realization that she had also been a victim of human trafficking.

Raised in a Christian home, but always feeling like she wasn't good enough. Raped at the age of eleven. Suffered multiple rapes in her teens and homelessness. She became a mother at seventeen.  She felt pressured to marry, at twenty, after having another baby. He abused her mentally, physically, even tried to kill her. After he left her with nothing she worked in bars, strip clubs, a phone sex operator and as an escort.

Going on thirteen years later learning to accept that what happened to her, as a child, was of no fault of her own. Moving past the labels, currently on a journey of self-discovery, she has found her voice and can't keep silent anymore.

Reader's Entertainment Radio Show Presents: Victoria Christopher Murray

    in Books

Readers, you'll definitely want to tune in this Thursday, August 6th at 6pm EST! My guest will be National Bestselling, and Award-Winning Author, Victoria Christopher Murray. Even as she was taking an unlikely path to her destination, Victoria Christopher Murray always knew she would become an author. In fact, after spending ten years in Corporate America, she never lost the dream to write and when the “bug” hit her again in 1997, she answered the call. Her latest novel, Stand Your Ground, centers on two women forced to grapple with their faith and their belief in the justice system when they become involved in a high-stakes murder trial.

    Book Blurb:

A black teenage boy is dead. A white man shot him. Was he standing his ground or was it murder?

Janice Johnson is living every black mother’s nightmare. Her seventeen-year-old son was murdered and the shooter has not been arrested. Can the D.A. and the police be trusted to investigate and do the right thing? Should Janice take advantage of the public outcry and join her husband alongside the angry protestors who are out for revenge?

Meredith Spencer is married to the man accused of the killing and she sees her husband and the situation with far more clarity than anyone realizes. What she knows could blow the case wide open, but what will that mean for her life and that of her son? Will she have the courage to come forward in time so that justice can be done?

#1 national bestselling and award-winning author Victoria Christopher Murray’s Stand Your Ground is a pulse-pounding meditation on race, motherhood, marriage, and vigilante justice that will have readers spellbound until its shocking end.
