This is a time of year when everyone talks about making New Year's resolutions. Typically we want to improve something about our personal lives, but those of us who are in business, often vow to do something to improve our business.
What we're really mean by this is to try harder to do the thing we know we should do. Even those of us in business make vows to ourselves to make changes that we already know needs to be done to improve the business.
But maybe we should be setting goals instead of making resolutions.
Setting goals is important, because this is how you convert your BRILLIANT IDEAS into specific measurable targets.
Step one is to decide what you want to achieve … what the end results will be.
Step two: draw a line in the sand and PUBLICLY say "This is when I will do it."
Step three: set measurable goals … be as specific as possible.
Step four: analyze the results. Don't wait 'till a year later to decide if you reached your goals. Analyze how you're proceeding on a regular basis.
Take a minute right now to think about your brilliant ideas and which ones you want to turn into goals for 2015.
Resolutions are for the birds! They are hard to make & even harder to keep. The ink is barely dry on the paper where we have written our resolutions when we are desperately searching for ways to break them. Sometimes, we don't even have to search very hard. Then we end up frustrated & wasting another year making not forward, positive progress in our lives!
For 2015, skip the resolutions & decide to set goals. Not a huge list of goals but simply 4-5, even 2-3 if the goals are important enough. How do you ensure you accomplish your goals this year? We call it a legacy or something that we can look back upon in our golden years to show that the many days we existed here upon this earth was indeed fruitful and not a waste. We tell ourselves this in order to feel better about the times we fail to act or fail at fulfill. Now while I must admit, goals are a good thing to have, I do agree that goals are for the reasons previously stated. My own personal take on a goal is that it can measure your seriousness about accomplishing the mission you have assigned to yourself and not some idea that others have saddled you with but like all things there is always a good and a bad.
