Hour of Power Broadcast Study Text : Judges 16 : 1-31
Key Verse : Judges 16 : 4-5
And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah.
And the lord of the Philistine came up to her, and said to her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lies, and, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will give you every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver.
Samson was "filled with love" for Delilah, but she was on the side of his enemies that wanted to kill him. Because of Delilah, Samson's eyes were gouged out and he was enslaved for many years before dying a very dramatic but triumphant death. What is it that we love that takes away the good blessings from God and better relationships with God that we could have? We are no different from Samson in that we, too, have a calling in this life. Do we also take it for granted?
Samson IS strange. Nobody names their child after him. Preachers don't preach about him. Yet he is so well known, that everybody knows something about him. The account of his life is so confusing that it makes some doubt accuracy and authenticity of his career in the Bible: On the one hand, he's heralded as a hero of the faith in the New Testament. On the other hand, a whoremonger and profane man who repeatedly provokes God. On the one hand, his birth was attended by angelic visitation, glory and miracles on par with John the Baptist's. On the other hand, his career consisted in killing people, and little else. On the one hand, he sleeps with Delilah and loves her. On the other hand, she tries three times to destroy him without even hiding her intent. Yet he stays with her for the final time. How do we explain this man? Tonight (Thurs.) we discuss him. Dating in this day and age is getting more difficult as the time passes. Being saved and dating can be even harder. It is necessary to open and understanding as who we are and the roles we play within a relationship. Delilah had one goal and that was to deceive Samson and strip him of his power, as if she was naive to knowing how he cared for her. Samson clearly saw all the red flags and decided to ignore them. So he fell trap to a deceitful woman because of the nature of his intent. We have to be careful as well as understand that Satan does attack "relationships" as well as individuals; while remaining focused on Christ and the intent of his messages. God never intended for us to be in bondage within relationships, including romantic ones. With God all things can and will be in decency and order. So perk up, theres hope for the saved and single (unmarried)!
Sexual sin has destroyed many a great man (women too) but men seem to fall harder and more often....why? Lets examine this in the story of Samson!
Samson was a man who was misused by the woman in his life. They always wanted him to "prove his love" when they only wanted it to be proven so they would have the opportunity to be in control over him (Judges 14:16-17, 16:15-20). Samson never took the time to step back and look at his infatuation with lust, anger, and naiveness. Samson would allow his anger to consume him because his understanding of being social was "an eye for an eye" (Judges 15:11) Once he gave his Nazarite covenant up to keep Delilah quiet he was stripped of his power when she called the guards in to cut his 7 locks from his head. They immediately put his eyes out, and made him grind corn. He was freed in death when his locks slowly started to grow back which equated to his supernatural God-given strength. He asked God to fill him with the strength to kill 3000 Philistines by his ability to knock the pillars down that they stationed him between. He was seen as "victory" for their god Dagon. Samson died that day, blind, filled with strength, and seeking revenge on the 3000 Philistine.
Men be careful not have your locks cut off in your sleep, because lust has you fooled. Lust and Love are two different things. Break free of the bondage of manipulative women. Walk light, be careful, and let God be your sight.
