The Riverside County Registrar of Voters is preparing to count the ballots that will decide many of the local and statewide races next week.
In recent years many voters have opted to receive-and-return ballots by mail.
In Riverside County, as of May 22, 2014, 500,682 vote by mail ballots were sent to registered voters. So far 56,995 ballots have been returned to the Registrar.

Hundreds, possibly thousands of people will need to reset their alarm clocks Saturday morning. A strong storm cell moved over the Riverside area bringing heavy rain, lightning and thunder.
At 2:56 a.m. and again at 2:57 a.m. lights flickered in the Canyon Crest area. By 3:01 Riverside Public Utilities confirmed that the bad weather had caused a widespread loss of electricity within the city.
Emergency crews have been dispatched repair the damage, however RPU has not said exactly what areas have been left in the dark.
The Riverside City Council is facing an upcoming vote that will determine the fate of the system of cameras that take pictures at serveral intersections in town. When the red-light camera system started in Riverside there were 30 cameras-- already several have been removed-- however the city still has 11 cameras in operation.
The red-light cameras in Riverside are operated by Redflex, a company based in Arizona.
Riverside Council Member Mike Soubirous is a former CHP commander, and he believes the camera system should be removed. The question: Does the rest of the council agree, or at least a simple majority?

In June the contest for Ward 3 did not result in a candidate receiving a simple majority of the votes. More than 5000 ballots were cast, according to the Riverside County Registrar of Voters. What resulted is a runoff between the top two candidates.
Candidate Mike Soubirous received 2,448 votes, or 46.15 percent of the ballots cast. His closest challenger was Valerie Hill with 1,743, or 32.86 percent of the vote.
Riverside, CA has had it's share of unusual weather during the past two days.

One of the most followed contests has been for the office of Riverside County District Attorney. Incumbent Paul Zellerbach was campaigning for his second term. His challenger is Mike Hestrin, a Riverside County prosecutor.
Hestrin is the District Attorney Elect as he is more than 13,000 votes ahead of his challenger Paul Zellerbach.
