This week is Valentine's Day. Many people will celebrate it with their loved ones. Others will take part in V-Day, a worldwide dance-based event to end violence against women and girls, put on by One Billion Rising.
Founded by Eve Ensler, creator of The Vagina Monologues, the huge rally is made possible by regional coordinators across the globe, with the help of people just like you.
One in three women on the planet will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. That is one billion women.
The name, One Billion Rising, is synergistic with our Billions Rising. And the cause is one that we believe in. So that week on our radio show, we decided to have a roundtable discussion on solutions to the topic.
Joining us are:
Patricia Melnice, Founder of Tough Angels, a Colorado-based non-profit. Their mission is to help put a stop to violence and rape in Africa, protect the survivors, and help the victims to heal and thrive.
Lucia Mitro, Founder of Timeless Light, who works directly with groups of immigrant women who are trying to leave violent relationships. She divides them based on their stage of the journey, and helps them find their own solutions.
Cynthia Nehf and Rochelle Hogge of Women's Crisis Support Team, who work with abused Oregon women to provide advocacy, intervention, education, support groups and access to services. Their goal is to help them be safe, learn their options and ultimately move into a position of renewed strength.
The conversation will be moderated by our host, Anita Casalina, and our producer, Heather Vale Goss.
Please share this episode of Billions Rising's Self-Reliance Radio with your friends.
