Winfred "Blue" Lovett, born November 16, 1943. Blue is one of the founding members and is the notable bass voice in the Manhattans.
The Manhattans were formed in the early 60s in New Jersey as a quintet led by writer/bass vocalist Winfred "Blue" Lovett and emotive lead singer George Smith, along with Edward "Sonny" Bivins, Richard "Ricky" Taylor and Kenneth "Wally" Kelly, all of whom had just returned from service in the armed forces. The group was popular regionally and had minor national success on the strength of some solid recordings for Carnival Records (their version of the country tune "From Atlanta to Goodbye" was a gem) in the late 60s before gaining the attention of Columbia Records in 1970. Unfortunately, their Columbia signing coincided with the sudden illness and untimely death of lead singer Smith. During a tour through North Carolina, the Manhattans came upon a college student with an amazing Sam Cooke-like voice. Recognizing the incredible talent of this 21 year old, the group invited Gerald Alston to join, and he became the lead singer who would bring stardom to the quintet.

Tough week for local hip hop collectives. J Arch, affiliated with several movements including End of the Weak and Team HOMI, lost his life while Brooklyn's Pro Era-based crew suffered another untimely death, as Joey Badass cousin and tour manager Junior B died in an accident.
Several members of J Arch's crew were in attendance and performing at the album release event for Hasan Salaam's "Live in Black and White" at Webster Hall. The combination album release, concert event, toy and coat drive was punctuated by recent events surrounding the non-aquittal for New York police officer Daniel Pantaleo in the chokehold death of Eric Garner. Much of Salaam's material, and those of others on the bill, circulate around social injustice issues, and it was a powerful event in that regard, one that included support by and for organizations such as the Center for Domestic Violence, CopWatch and others.
This particular event points out a problem with some of those who criticize hip hop for not being vocal enough in response to social issues, recently expounded on by Questlove. While Questlove was calling out bigger stars, the problem is that such criticism fails to take into account those who ARE doing great work in the field.
We'll talk about all these things tonight, as well as preview some upcoming events, and as always, take your calls.
Tonight's episode of The NY Hip Hop Report is brought to you by SuperFly: My Untold Story of Hip-Hop, Gloria Goldwater's fascinating look back at the history of her SuperFly magazine, which documented the early explosion of hip hop music. The book is available now!
Who would have THUNK that after all these years, Robert Redwine would still be in the fold. You would have thought by now that he would have folded (like in playing cards and you got a real "bad" hand that ain't worth 2 bits). And you would have probably come to the conclusion that he would have developed some "skills" in this broadcasting craft, but no, he has come to be known as Rip Van Winkle, and Merlin, because he falls asleep and is constantly disappearing, and that ain't the act. Anyway - this was pre-Jay King Network, but it was Jay King. Check it out.

As a group of sisterfriends huddled together in the kitchen following our Sunday celebration service one of them said to me, "Dee, you go gurl, not many chocolate sisters can wear red lipstick!" I smiled. See, years ago I'd stopped wearing bright red lipstick. Recently, I started back. Oooooooh, and I love it!
I'd bet you too have a tube of red lipstick in your makeup bag, right? Do you dare wear it? You like bright, bold colors but do you wear them on your lovely bones? Can you, if asked on the spot, stand center stage and tell a room full of attentive people what you do, love, and fear? Do you ever just let it rip and brag about how fabulous, strong, and talented you are?
If you answered "no" to any one of these questions, why don't you? What's stopping you?
In this episode, Successful Women Wear Red Lipstick, I'll tell you a quietly kept "secret" that I "stumbled" (it was divine intervention really) across that simply explains why some women ROCK men's worlds, shine in their chosen work, and just have more fun, while other women struggle. As we go into 2015 wanting and hoping for more, I'll offer you some simple but powerful strategies for creating more of what you want! I hope you'll tune in on Thursday, December 18, 6:30pm ET on Own Your Power with DeBora M. Ricks.
